10.2 Install Problem on 7500 |

I've been running 10.1.5 on this machine, and so I downloaded XPF 2.2 to install 10.2 The 7500: CPU: Sonnet G3 270 Mhz PCI: Sonnet Tempo/66, ATI Radeon Mac Drives: (ATA via PCI) 20 Gb Seagate, Yamaha 2100E CD/RW; stock 0.5 Gb SCSI I inserted the installer disk in the CD drive, restarted from XPF to install. The installer ran. I performed a Clean Install, with archive. At the expected kernal panic, I rebooted from XPF and got a hang on the start-up screen with the eternal sprocket. I rebooted again in verbal mode and got a lot of error messages about "oldworld.PatchedIO.SCSI" Rebooted from XPF with "Reinstall Extensions" and same result. Moved my archived system to backup via Retrospect 5 and reformatted the drive. Attempted boot to Install CD stalls and then dumps back to OS 9. Attempted verbose boot does the same, never makes it to Darwin. Swaped Yamaha for an Apple DVD-ROM (ATA) from a G4 tower, same result. Removed 20 Gb drive and plugged in a 1.5 Gb drive I had on the shelf, restored archived (10.1.5) system files, reboot from XPF 2.2 and the same PatchedIO.SCSI errors. I'm going to try to download and reinstall extension from an the earlier XPF that I was using before to see if that helps. My orginal Apple CD tanked a few months ago- powers up but won't mount media Any ideas? |

Ah, sorry I missed that. The /sbin/mach_init, errno 86 message is interesting. On my 10.2 installation, the /sbin/mach_init shows up as follows: -r-xr-xr-x 1 root wheel 40684 Aug 24 20:01 /sbin/mach_init The errno 86 seems to mean this: #define EBADARCH 86 /* Bad CPU type in executable */ While errno 2 is this: #define ENOENT 2 /* No such file or directory */ The errno 2 makes sense, because there is no file /etc/mach_init on my 10.2 installation either. The errno 86 seems to suggest that your /sbin/mach_init file has gotten corrupted somehow. There have been reports at http://www.macfixit.com of problematic install CDs which have effects something like this. You might try reinstalling, or reinstalling with a different CD. And it would be interesting to see what the size of your /sbin/mach_init file is. |

I guess I wasn't clear. The problem is unrelated to video. It occurs both with the Radeon and without (card removed). Please see the error messages in my post of 8/29 below. Do those help? |

If I understand correctly, it sounds like you've isolated the problem as something that relates to the Radeon PCI card. What you might try doing is seeing whether there is a firmware update available for that card. That might be worth a try. As far as I know, there isn't a general problem with the Radon card in 10.2 (at least, I haven't heard of one yet--I haven't tried it myself). BTW, the various error messages about PatchedIOSCSICDDrive etc. not loading are normal. Some of the patches are only needed for certain versions of Mac OS X, so they are set up so that they will load only in those versions and not others. |

I forgot about the 8 Gig. restrictiion. The installer runs every time just fine. I've tried removing all SCSI defices, includiing the internal hard drive. Now using my 1.5 Gig as the OS 9 drive. I also tried the Sonnet installer (I paid for it last January before I heard about XPF). Their installer ran and booted from the CD. 10.2 intstalled. I held down the option key at the restart after install, booted into 9. Restarted into 10.2 successfully. Worked thorugh the Setup Assistant. Shut Down. Rebooted. Reinserted Radeon Mac PCI. Similar errors with the mach-init: errno 88 and errno 2 |

I used XPF 2.2b7 to install 10.1 on my 1.5 Gb drive. Same SCSI error messages, but then Darwin did an auto reboot and 10.1 worked fine. Reformatted this test drive. Used 2.2 to install 10.2 and the installer ran. Rebooted into 9. Booted from XPF 2.2 into 10.2, selecting "verbose, Reinstall BootX and Extensions" Final error messages follow: Load of /sbin/mach_init, errno 86, trying /etc/mach_init Load of /etc/mach_init failed, errno 2 Timeout: T/L = 2:0 Cmd = 01e1c400 Cmd Type=1 Timeout: T/L = 2:0 Cmd = 01e1ce400 Cmd Type=3 |
