system dies after accessing AFP... |

I have noticed that when I connect to another machine (running 9.2.2) on my network using Appletalk via Ethernet, I get a strange message that locks up my machine and indicates that I need to restart. It shows my IP and mac address. I am able to move around on the remote machine, and everything seems OK for a couple of minutes. The error comes even if I disconnect from the other machine. I am connecting my using the "Connect to Server.." selection from the Go menu, and then selecting the machine. Anyone else having this problem, or know if this is an Old World issue, or 10.2 issue? |

After my first day on 10.2, I have not seen this error again. I have been accessing AFP without any trouble since then. I did upgrade my memory from 256M to 480M, but other than that, no real changes that I can think of. No panics at all since adding memory and turning on the debug mode... |

>> The driver for the built-in ethernet is supplied by XPostFacto, so it is possible that your problem relates particularly to Old World machines. << Maybe. I have had a hell of time getting 10.1 server running stable on a Umax S900. The symptoms were exactly the same: the WHOLE IP stack was gone after accessing AFP. This seems to affect AFP most - SMB has much less problems and Apple Remote Desktop has absolute NONE. This is indicating somehow to somelink like a timing/buffer problem? But the XPostFactor driver isn't alone: the RealTek 8139 1.1 has exactly the same symptoms too. I have now a 24/7 stable machine using a DEC 21130 chipset based 10 MBit card which will be replaced soon be a 100Mbit Intel based one. Anyone who is experiencing problems like these should take a look into the Extensions Folder and watch out which Chipsets are supported by Apple. Chances are that these will work flawless. |

That is the screen that I get. I will turn on the debug option and see if I can get more detailed info... |

It sounds like a kernel panic. Are you getting the new kernel panic screen in Mac OS X 10.2, with the multilingual text and the "power button" graphic? If so, you can use the "Debug" menu in XPostFacto 2.2.1 to get the "panic text" instead (that is, the backtrace etc.). With that information, it might be possible to track down the problem. The driver for the built-in ethernet is supplied by XPostFacto, so it is possible that your problem relates particularly to Old World machines. |
