Audio skipping in 10.2 |

Over the past few days since I have installed 10.2 on my Daystar Genesis (original Apple 9500 motherboard, G3/400 cpu, 576MB RAM) Ive noticed that audio and video skip a lot. I thought at first this was due to the PCI IDE card I was using (Acard ATA/133) but then, I noticed that iTunes even skips while playing CDs from the CDrom that is run from the onboard SCSI bus. I tried moving my MP3s over to my startup drive (an 8GB SCSI, also on the onboard bus) and they skip as well. iTunes seems to be able to rip CDs just fine, which is odd. I think it might have something to do with changes to either coreaudio or the iokit, but im not sure. Has anyone else noticed these problems? |

Well, after a bit of tinkering, I have found a solution, at least for my machine. I swapped the PCI cards around, putting the Radeon 7000 in A1, and the Acard 133 in D2. My reasoning was that PCI bus 1 has to share the bandwidth with a few other onboard devices, so I would leave the ATA card to saturate the 2nd bus by itself. I also pulled out all of the RAM and interleaved as much of it as is possible, thinking that if the memory could be accessed in a big 128 bit chunk, maybe it would help the bandwidth problems. I've restarted back into 10.2, and amazingly enough, I can play quicktime movies from the IDE drive, something that I've never been able to do. I'd be interested in hearing if anyone else has success trying this on a similar setup. |

I agree that something's happened in either coreaudio or the io setup. On mine it not only skips, but will often skip a few times and then stop using audio altogether. I have this happen on both an ATA and SCSI arrangement. Once the audio's gone, it's gone in all apps, although everything else continues to work well, but audio will only work again after a restart. I've been tempted to try putting a 10.1.5 kext related to audio in, to see if it helps, but I'm too ignorant of things programming to do this with confidence. When Jaguar was beta (c65 or something like that) sound didn't work at all for me. I did put a 10.1.5 kext in replacing one of it's own, and sound worked then. I've done clean installs since then and can't remember which kext file I tried. |
