I have an 8600 with a Sonnet G4/500 upgrade card and 768MB RAM. It also has an Adaptec 29160 card with 2 Ultra160 drives in it. It has the original CD ROM and a Yamaha CD-RW and the original 4GB HD on the original factory bus. I also have an ATI graphics card installed. I can't get XPF to install on this machine. When XPF restarts the screen stays blank. I have tried plugging into the different video ports (factory and the ATI) and can't get past the blank screen. Any suggestions? |

Are you trying to install onto one of the Adaptec-connected drives, or the original 4 GB drive? If installing onto the Adaptec-connected drives isn't working, checking for a firmware update would be a good idea. And you could try the 4 GB drive instead. Also, try holding down command-v as the computer reboots. That should get you some kind of error message from Open Firmware. (Probably of the "can't OPEN" variety--if so, that suggests a problem with the firmware on the Adaptec card). |

I have an 8600/300 upgraded with a Newertech G3/500. I also have an Adaptec 29160 and an ATI Orion Card. I have been sucessful with 10.1.3- 10.2. One problem I had was that I had to update the firmware on the Adaptec card (available on their site), before I could get OS X to boot from the 29160. Seems like there might be updated drivers for OS X also. I also had problems with the ATI Card, especially with OS X 10.1.3. There were special drivers I needed from ATI (since included in 10.2). I would suggest pulling your ATI card, and switching back to onboard video until you get the install to work. Then download the updated ATI drivers (if you have 10.1.X), and install them. Then I would reinstall the ATI card, and move your monitor over to that card. Reboot and you should be all set. One word of Warning: I also have an Internal Yamaha 8424 SCSI CDRW. With 10.1.X I could only get the drive to work ocassionally - even though it worked in 9.1 and 9.2. With 10.2, SCSI CR-DW's are recognized only as CD's, and you will not be able to use it at all. I finally brokw down and purchased a 16x10x40 Firewire drive, and it has been working great (I have the Adaptec USB and Firewire card too). Good Luck! |

I tried all your suggestions and still can't get past startup. I did get a funny screen with little dashes of color but that is it. For a minute there I thought it just might go but it didn't. I even went so far as to try different monitors, all to no avail. Chuck |

cnk, I'm at work & thus not at my 8600 which runs 10.1.5 fine and I'm getting there with 10.2. So, I'll do my best to help. My 8600 is a /200 upgraded with a Powerlogix G4/450 & Rapidfire USB & Firewire card, and an ATTO UW SCSI card with 2 Atlas III 18.2GB drives in addition to a 4GB & 8GB on the internal, slow SCSI (with a CD-ROM & Zip). It also has an ATI 128 Rage video card. Try XPF with "verbose" and define the output to be the ATI card. These options are under the Advanced menu, I belive. If you get no joy, try taking out the ATI card, rebooting to 9 to run XPF with the output defined as default (or something like that). I think it's probably the ATI card that causing your problem because as you can tell, I've got a similar setup as you. Oh, another thought. If the Sonnet card is up-clock, put it at the buss speed of 50MHz so as to not have memory become a factor. Hope this helps. Good Luck! --Dwight |
