Just tried to start X (10.1.5) with 2.2.2 (turned on "reinstall Extension" and got a broken folder in the middle of the grey Apple. X worked before though I ran DiskWarrior since the last time I was in X. Could it have messed things up? Should I throttle back further maybe? (I always got the broken folder before the throttle was introduced) BTW: 8600 with Sonnet G4/450. |

Well, I took a chance and tried to install (update actually) from10.1.5 to 10.2 XPF 222 intalled it fine. Have already upped it to 10.2.1! Everything so far works...Classic (9.1), SCSI Yamaha 6416 burner, Epson 880 printer (it always did), Internet .... What ever the previous problem was, seems to have cleared up with my last stripdown/rebuild - I hope! The machine is an 8600/Sonnet G4/450 with 448 meg/ram (interleaved) 9Gig 7200rpm hd + 36 Gig 10000rpm hd (formatted with Hard Disk Speed Tools as per your suggestion. X is on the 36. Now I'm waiting for an Atto SCSI card to go with that 36 hd (from OWC naturally) Hope it will be a worthwile investment. We'll see if it all still works. I'll write again after it is installed. As always, my thanks Ryan!!! |

I will try your suggestion but it will have to wait a bit as both my wife and I have some work to produce on this machine. After the last episode (which may or may not have been responsible) I was having problems and ended up with a black screen (in 9.1). This required a good hour of reinstalling the origional 604, Cuda switch, reinstall Sonnet software (for the Nvram update), reinstall G4 card, reinstall Ati video card....... So 9.1 is back fine for now. So I do have 2 thoughts. There may be something with the Ati card though X woked fine with it before. Then there is the Nvram. It really plays a major part in the operation of the ability to run X? It may have been messed up enough that eventually it needed a rebuild. Let you know what happens the next opportunity I get. |

Try setting your "output-device" in the Open Firmware menu of XPostFacto, and then hold down command-v as the computer restarts. That should get you an actual error message, rather than just the broken folder. Let me know what you get. |
