ATI Rage Orion to Raedon 7000 UG |

I installed 10.2 with a Rage Orion, and have recently installed a Raedon 7000. The performance doesn't seem like much of an improvement. ATI says the drivers are part of 10.2. Were the 7000 drivers installed automatically with 10.2, or do I have to get them from the 10.2 disc? I have also run "PCI Extreme" to implement Quartz Extreme. |

My now humble opinoon is that spending more money on hardware is not the thing to do. The Raedon 7000 card makes very little difference in screen performance, with or without QE. My wife's 7600 400G3 is lively compared to my 7600 500 G3 with 10.2.1. Keeping the 7600 alive is a good way to get ready for the 10 transition, but you pay a performance price. Save you money for new X software and a modern machine. |

I have been thinking about doing the same thing. By problem with the Orion is that scrolling in IE 5.2.1 is to0 slow/choppy when set to millions of colors. I have set my colors to 1,000's just to make the scrolling "less choppy". Does the Radeon 7000 have similar problems? Have you tried turning off PCI Extreme? Did you have to deal with the boot issues mentioned in other threads (ie no video when the grey apple is on the screen - only when the blue OS X screens display)? |
