Here's what Command-v says: ... Welcome to Macintosh. Sep 19 10:49:51 SystemSTarter: Tuning system Tuning system Sep 19 10:49:51 System Starter: Selecting SymDC Extension Selecting SymDC Extension Sep 19 10:49:52 SystemStarter: Starting SecurityServer Starting SecurityServer boot-command 00 bootr kern.maxvnodes: 1328 -> 7984 kern.sysv. shmmax: -1 -> 4194304 kern.sysv.shmmin: -1 -> 1 kern.sysv. shmmni: -1 -> 32 Sep 19 10:49:53 /System/Library/CoreServices/SecurityServer: Entering service kern.sysv.shmsg: -1 -> 8 kern.sysv.shmall: -1 -> 1024 "then cursor stops right here and no further action is recognized. No sound of my noisy hard disk" Can you help? This Mac is 7600 with G3/400 Powerlogics card and running 10.2.1 (yes, just upgraded). It was running OK but then somehow I 've decided to install L2CacheConfig because I've lost it (I guess) while I was replacing the hard disk the other day. Apple system profiler said "L2 cach size was 0k". I started L2CachConfig and enabled L2 cache. Then I rebooted the Mac and here I am. BTW, up above in the screen, I see some phrases like " Extension oldworld.support.PatchedIOSCSICDDrive cannot be found" and few others. Does it matter? Thanks, kazuaki |

It sounds like L2CacheConfig may well be causing problems for you. One alternative would be to try the PowerLogix Cache Control software, to see whether it works better for you (it is also free). Or you could try adjusting some of the cache settings--use write back mode, instead of write-thru, for instance, or lower the cache speed a notch. |

After all, I've decided to reinstall 10.2 by simply overwriting the existing one using XPostFacto because "First Disk Aid" in OS 9 reports an error in something like "catalog Btree". "First Disk Aid" could fix it but I thought it could be one reason (damaged directory or hard disk structure) why OSX halts there while booting. That's before I read your reply. It is now working in 10.2.1 system with L2cache installed but "un- enabled." The reason why un-enabled is that almost always I receive a message "I need to restart the computer" or to that effect in 3 languages (Japanese, English, & French) after a while. I'm not sure if L2cache is the reason or not but, when "un-enabled", it sure can continue to work for 24 hours (naturally, screen redrawing or other actions are slow). Do you think the message I receive is caused by L2cache? If so, do I have no chance to utilize L2cache in my system without intermittent restarting? Is there anywhere else I should check? Thanks, Kazuaki |

The errors related to oldworld.support.PatchedIOSCSICDDrive and the like are normal--those kernel extensions aren't needed in 10.2, so they are set up in such a way that they won't load. It sounds as though L2CacheConfig is causing problems on your system for some reason. The point at which things stop is about that point at which it might be running. So you should try removing it and see if that helps. You can remove the startup item at this path: /Library/StartupItems/L2CacheStart Or you can just rename the preferences file at /Library/Preferences/rempel.ryan.L2CacheConfig.plist |
