Is anyone else experiencing a similiar problem as this... Has anyone had success in using iMovie with OSX. I can't import anything from the video camera and my FireWire drive locks up until I discconnect the camera. iMovie works fine by itself. But I have to import the video on my laptop then switch drives. Tom 8600 G4/800 Sonnet Upgrade 480MB Ram FireWire card |

After working with DA1der for a night (see my other post for the download URL) : 1.Capture to my ATA100 connected 30 gig ATA drive is flawless 2.Any attempt to capture to either of my external Firewire drives results in either the "BBOD" or in a 1-second capture (good audio/video,just 1 second max [ ?] ).I managed 1 good capture out of a dozen attempts, and have no idea how/why. 3.Once I transfer the captured clips to an iMovie project on either Firewire drive from the ATA drive,iMovie recognizes the clip;editing and playback are then normal.. 4. In 10.1.5 ,I can capture to my Firewire drives in iMovie 2.1.1 with no problem as long as my USB devices are disconnected (also disconnected in the above examples) ... 5.The DV camera must be connected via Firewire through one of the Firewire drive ports rather than directly to the Firewire card for DA1der to see it under 10.2.1;I haven't checked this under 10.1.5 because iMovie sees the camera on the card and captures with no problem.... I'm using the OS-installed versions of iMovie in both 10.1.5 and 10.2.1. So...what conclusions can wiser minds than mine draw from this info? Please share ... |

http://www.photosurrealism.com/downloads/... With the application downloadable there,I was able to capture videoin 10.2.1 for the first time from my Sony TRV230 through the Firewire port to an ATA drive good audio,no frame drops)..just follow the "readme" instructions.. Couple of gotchas I've noticed: 1.you can't preview your video as it's being captured (this is a simple capture app;you'll need to place the captured files in the "Media" directory of an iMovie project for iMovie to see them) 2.it doesn't appear to capture well to my Firewire drives (I need more time to check this out) 3.It will only see the DV camera if it's plugged into one of the Firewire drives, not directly into the Firewire card (?) Nevertheless, it does allow me to capture thru Firewire in 10.2.1.....oh.and you'll probably need to Plug/unplug the Firewire connector from the camera a couple times with the camera playing back before the DA1der (the capture app) will see the camera, but it does eventually.. Hope this helps someone... |

I have a customized gossamer G3 with macOSXServer and my situation is similar to the one of treczek: I don't get any errors at all. I just get the "Beach Ball of Death" until I disconnect the camera. Themore I have to say that in macos9.0 and 9.1, I was (and am) able to use firewire to import my movies from my sharp minidv i-link. This seems to be a macosx bug ! |

I figured that my card is probably the problem... Oh Well! I really don't need it after this project is over. So I will wait until after Macworld January to see if upgrading to a new machine with all the bells and whistle is going to be worth it. Thanks again, Tom |

Now that you mention the BBOD, a few weeks ago in trying to figure out why my import kept quitting I borrowed a FW card from my dad for testing . The FW card was confirmed good on a PC with a external FW drive. However, when I put it in my machine, connected my camcorder and turned it on all I would get was the BBOD and iMovie was locked up. When I turned off the camera iMovie would unfreeze and everything was fine. I tried moving the card to other PCI slots but got the same results. That card just didn't work with my machine. Britney |

Thanks Britney, I don't get any errors at all. I just get the "Beach Ball of Death" until I disconnect the camera. I was told by some tech support guy that my FireWire card was a very good one. I think its an old Newer Tech one. Maybe it's time to upgrade it. Tom |

I have an OrangeMicro FW/USB card as well as a Canon ZR25MC. I have been able to import video but during a long import iMovie will stop importing and give me the error that a drive responded slowly. However, I don't believe that the error is accurate because my drive tests at over 20MB/s which I believe should be plenty fast. I think that my problem may be that my FW/USB card's bridge chip is trying to deal with both Firewire and USB and it does not have enough bandwidth. It seems to do much better when I remove everything off the USB chain. Britney |
