10.0 won't install on 8500 |

I am using XPF 2.2.2 with the OS 10.0 install CD and the following configuration: * 8500/120 with 604e/132 from a 7600 * 2-128MB OWC DIMMS (also have tried to install with my old RAM--96MB of random old DIMMs) * Apple SCSI CD-ROM Drive (600i, Firmware 1995) installed internally and externally * Quantum Viking II 9.1GB SCSI Drive on external bus (with 68 to 50 pin adapter), recently partitioned into two drives with Apple disk tools (the version on the 9.1 install CD) * I also tried a Quantum Fireball SE 4.3 GB drive with no luck. I have seen a lot of different errors, but most recently this one in the installer (blue screen): Preparing Installation... The Installer has unexpectedly quit. (error 60) Other errors: waitformesh - mesh chip does not respond to command IOSCSIHDDrive[IOBasicSCSI]: SCSI bus reset occurred; begin recovery. Still waiting for root device (haven't seen this since I put the CD on the external bus) Jettisoning kernal linker Resetting IOCatalog disk1s1s9: I/O error. (I get this one almost every time) (In dialog box of installer) ERROR Bundle NSBundle (not yet loaded) did not load! I think my biggest problem might be the I/O error. Does this refer to the CD or the Hard drive? I can also post or email the XPF log file if that will help. |

Success & SCSI CD-RW question. |

It turns out my cd-rom drive was bad (or at least very flakey). I did have a spare 600i that worked just fine (even on the internal bus), and I am now updated to 10.1.5 (thanks to the post from john.feinberg for the update procedure). Now it's time to buy that upgrade card, and I thought I should buy a cd-rw while I was at it, but I am wondering about the compatibility of the Hewlett Packard 9600SI SCSI 12x8x32 and Roxio Toast 5 Lite - OEM available form OWC. Will that version of Taost work in OSX? Will the drive work in OSX? From what I can tell, the drive won't work with DiskBurner or iTunes, and the el Gato drivers won't help. Does anyone have experience with this drive? |

On a "too simple to be believed" note, you might make sure that your 10.0 install CD doesn't have any scratches on it. I was having random install crashes going from 10.0 to 10.1 (including the "installer unexpectedly quit" crash), when I noticed some scratches on my 10.1 disk. The wear and tear on the CD didn't look like anything out of the ordinary, but just to be sure I ran the CD through one of those $29 "Disk Dr." thingies, and bam! perfect installation. I think the very large number of very small files which OS X installs makes the install process vulnerable to minor scratches on the install CD. |

Version 2.2.2 should still work with Mac OS X 10.0--I have tested it, and it works for me :-) I'll paste in your errors and comment on them: -- Preparing Installation... The Installer has unexpectedly quit. (error 60) When the installer unexpectedly quits, that is most often a problem with memory. But since your other error messages all seem disk-related, it might not be the problem in your case. -- waitformesh - mesh chip does not respond to command -- IOSCSIHDDrive[IOBasicSCSI]: SCSI bus reset occurred; begin recovery. This suggests some problem with the SCSI bus. Termination would be one thing to check. Sometimes a particular SCSI device will be problematic and removing it from the bus can help. Some people have had success after replacing the SCSI cable (but that is awkward to do). -- Still waiting for root device (haven't seen this since I put the CD on the external bus) That also suggests that the internal bus was problematic in some way. -- Jettisoning kernal linker Resetting IOCatalog That is normal--it's not an error. -- disk1s1s9: I/O error. (I get this one almost every time) That would relate to the CD. It is reading enough of the CD to get its partition structure, but having some trouble reading partition 9. I suppose it is possible that there is a problem with the CD itself. -- (In dialog box of installer) ERROR Bundle NSBundle (not yet loaded) did not load! I haven't seen that one yet. Though it is possible that it is a side-effect of the IO error. |

The drive is formated HFS+, and I have a SCSI terminator plugged into it. I don't have any other cards installed, and I would love to get a G4 card, but I want to make sure OS X works on my machine first! I have tried a few other versions of XPF, but I can't remember which ones and which errors I got with them. If there is a version that would work best for me, which one should I try? |

Is the drive formated HSF+? Another thing to look for is to make sure that your SCSI termination is good. They say OS X is a little more picky about termination. One problem I had when I first tried with an IBM drive was solved by setting the drives jumpers to Disable Unit Attention. If you have any cards installed try removing them until you have installed OS X. One other posable problem is that XPF 2.2.2 is used for installing 10.2. I don't know if it still supports version 10.0. If you aren't having any luck you might want to try an older version. A G4 card wouldn't hurt either. |
