Forum software throws out single Return chars |

It seems the forum software throws out single Return characters, which makes it difficult to properly display multiple lines of code, etc.: This is a line followed by another line by just a single Return This is supposed to be a second line And this is a line followed by a space then a Return, to see if that helps And this is the second line after the one that ends with a space then a Return It also has trouble with lines that contain left and right pointing carets (I won't type them now, since that will trigger the trouble)--it seems to interpret them as HTML, and doesn't show the text within the carets or something. Any chance this can be fixed, or is there a workaround? |

Just makes the type a different font, but doesn't preserve formatting like it should!? Ok, now that's annoying... Sorry, I tried. I thought I was being so clever, too... |

Hmm. never mind. That wasn't the enlightening example I meant it to look like. <TT> doesn't work. What about <CODE> ? Testing CODE tag to see what it does. (If this doesn't work, oh well.) |

I don't think it's a big deal, but I guess it helps to know how it behaves. Probably the easiest way to deal with something that needs to keep text formatting is to enclose it in <TT> and <TT> tags. So when you're posting logs, command line code, output, etc... just do that. Quick & simple: A 1 2 3 B 4 5 6 . . . remember ASCII art? . . . This way you can switch between "conversation" and "take me literally" modes. |

That works! Thanks, avit, for the explanation. It'd be nice to know why the forum's designers favor an HTML-style handling of text, rather than the statistically more likely fact that text in forums will be entered by a human in conversation mode. |

Let me try that... Test line 1 Test line 2 Test line 3 |

Once upon a time I'm sure I saw an AppleScript that would HTML'ize your text, if you don't have a text editor that does. It might be a handy thing to have in one's Scripts menu for just this purpose... |

Well italic bold works. How about some text in large red Times font? |

avit, Thank you for finally explaining how this forum interprets input. It's been a constant source of annoyance to everyone trying to reproduce things like kernel panic listings and command line instructions. It's still a shame that entries are not editable by the person who submitted them. We'll just have to adopt your approach of typing a best guess as to the required pseudo html and checking that the result approximates to what we intended. |

Test line 1 Test line 2 Test line 3 Actual input, (I don't know if this will display correctly): Test line 1<br> Test line 2<br> Test line 3<p> (The theory is to use br tags for line breaks and "lt" & "gt" entities for angle brackets. Let's see if that works.) |
