Jaguar freezes during large file transfers |

I just found out yesterday that during large file transfers over my Airport network, the 9500 will lock up after about 5-6MB have been transferred between two Jaguar machines. The lock-up symptoms are a blank screen and no recovery method other than reboot. The problem occurs when transferring files via Timbuktu Pro 6.02, doing a Finder copy with a mounted drive from the remote machine, and even during a simple ftp transfer. I've tried transferring from the 9500 to my AGP G4 and also from the AGP G4 to the 9500 - direction of the file transfer is irrelevant. Only the 9500 locks up; the AGP machine just complains that the other machine is no longer responding. Other than this problem, the 9500 is rock solid. I also noticed this problem in 10.1.x so it's probably not unique to Jaguar. But, of all 4 machines that I have running Jaguar on a network, only the 9500 locks up. I keep wondering if the XPF extensions may be causing this problem because Jaguar transfers large files fine on my other 3 fully supported machines. And the 9500 runs all day with games, web browsers, etc. Only large file transfers cause this problem. Has anyone else experienced this? |

I have an acquaintance who was having this problem with a late model PowerMAc, and reports that it was cured by the 10.2.1 update. |

I'm using the 9500's on-board Ethernet. I have an old Asante PCI card in my Starmax but it has no driver support for OS X. Unless XPF's built-in driver would support the Asante card, I'm afraid I can't test this configuration. All three transfer methods freeze the machine after about 6M has been transferred, so the problem is repeatable. I've run TT Pro and both OS 9's and X's DFA over the OS X drive without issues and have also cleaned up permissions. One thing I haven't tried yet is to go back to OS 9 and attempt the large file transfers. I'll try that and report back. |

Does the problem only occur when using the onboard Ethernet connection to transfer files? XPostFacto does provide the driver for that, so it is possible that there is a bug there. Though I have ftp'd files larger than 5 MB before without incident. Do you have access to a PCI Ethernet adapter? It would be interesting to see whether that worked better. (If it did, that would suggest that the driver for the onboard ethernet is at fault). |

This is a strange problem. I had a semilar problem when I tried to copy large files from an ATA hard disk to the internet SCSI disk from MacOS 9. The only thing that I can figure out it that the PCI cards are not as fast it should be with the 9500 (I also have a 9500) This problem was fixed in Mac OS X and did not seen any other time this problem. One sujestion. Try to put the PCI card that uses the network (I assume that you use a PCI card) at the upper PCI slot of the machine. Also I would like to ask you a querstion. The PCI Bus of the 9500 is the 2.0 is the card you are using a 2.1 or 2.2??? From personal experience the 2.1 works with our machine but I had problems to use 2.2 cards. Do someone with technical experience know the deferences of these three versions of PCI cards?? |
