8500 wont boot after shutdown |

8500 has 10.1 loaded and works okay. When the machine is shut down and allowed to sit for some time say one hour or over night, it will not restart. From the power key it makes a thump sound but does not boot. Zapping the pram does not help. Earlier I was able to remove the upgrade card and zap the pram before reinstalling the card. It will then boot up to a point, and a forced restart is required to get it to boot up. If shut down, I'm back to removing the upgrade acrd and zapping the pram again. Machine has 2 SCSI drives. 2gig w/ 9.1, and a partioned 9 gig w 10.1. I have a ATI 7000 card installed, as I am ready to install 10.1.5. |

I have had the same problem. The problem I believe is that the Radeon card has two monitor ports, it is sending signal to the wrong port. When I remove my Radeon card and replace it with an older IX micro the machine boots immediately. Then I shut-down and replace the Radeon card and everything works as usual once again. Keith |

8500 w/ sonnet G3 400 still will not boot after shut down after new battery was installed. Machine will restart or boot within a few minutes of a shut down, but if allowed to sit for 30 minutes, it will not boot. The power key will only cause the machine to momentarily bump on with drive lights and sound, but stops there. I have upgraded to OS X 10.2 thinking this might solve the problem, with no change. Hardware and drives remain unchanged. apple 12 x CD, apple 2 gig SCSI drive, IBM 9 gig SCSI drive partioned in two. OS X and 9 are installed on separate drives. OS X is installed at top of 9 gig, 9 is installed on 2 gig. Comments anyone? Trisaia |

A warm boot of the machine does work, but a forced cold reboot does not. Im not sure how long the machine can be shut down before it will not boot. I have a new battrey on order, just to be sure of the dead battery possiblity. I'll have more to say early next week. Thanks to everyone for your comments and ideas. trisaia |

One thing you could try is to do the "forced reboot" right away when the computer won't start up. There are cases where a cold boot doesn't work, but a warm boot will. (The reasons aren't very clear). |

Have removed ATI 7000 video card. Still had to remove processor an zap pram in order to boot into OS X. Battery was changed, as I replaced entire logic board when problem first manefest itself. Its possible both batteries could be bad, but both were working okay with 9.1 before loading X. Is it possible that there is a problem with the addressing of the 2 SCSI drives? I have let the machine run constantly for 2 days, and shut down last night due to a heavy storm. This morning it is back to the same problem. Trisaia |

I have a similar problem with my PowerCenter. If I unplug it for about 1/2 hour it will boot again into X. Has a brand new battery. |

From your post it sounds like you are using a version of 10.1 prior to 10.1.5. The Radeon 7000 is not compatible with version of X prior to 10.1.5. Although it is unusual that you were even able to get 10.1 to install with the Radeon 7000 installed. Try removing the Radeon 7000 and using the 8500's onboard video until you get 10.1.5 installed and then reinstall the Radeon 7000. Britney |
