OS X refuses to install on 37gb drive |

Please forgive me if this is answered elsewhere. I tried to find something similar in the forum, but didn't, so here's my problem. I have an 8500/150 w/PowerLogix G3 upgrade card, 512mb RAM, and two internal SCSI drives: one 9.1gb, the other 37gb. I originally installed OS X on a smaller 4gb drive, and it installed and worked fine. After installing the 37gb drive, testing it to make sure it was a good drive, and removing the smaller 4gb, I can't seem to get X to install. I'm using xpostfacto 2.2.3. I have removed my USB and Firewire cards, as well as the ATI Radeon 7000 card. The 37gb drive was formatted using HD SpeedTools. It successfully installs the BootX extensions, restarts the machine, shows the gray Apple screen, then jumps into a Unix error, ending with "panic: we are hanging here." Any ideas? I know this machine will take it because it did with the smaller drive, but what's up with the 37gb drive? I want to be able to put OS X on the larger drive, leaving 9.1 on the smaller driver. Help! Thanks in advance. Sherry Stinson sherry@cooldesigns.net |

Problems once you get to the installer are often memory related, but since you have had 10.2 installed already, that seems less likely. It can also be a problem with the CD itself. If you have another CD to try, that can be worthwhile. Or some people have had better luck with copies of a CD than the original (you wouldn't think so, but ...) It can also be a problem with termination, the SCSI cable, etc. But it sounds like you've checked into all of that. |

I had posted in an earlier message about not being able to install to a WD 18gig drive. It just plain would not work and I had no idea why. Every utility I have said the drive was fine. Termination was/is fine. For some reason however OS X will not install on that drive. I worked around the problem by installing OS X on a 4 gig drive that did work with the installer and then using Carbon Copy Cloner to move X to the 18 gig drive where it lives now and is working without trouble. bill |

Response to fuzzball: I have removed all extra cards, including the ATI card (see initial post). And yes, it was 10.2 that I installed on the 4gb drive. I had it installed for a few days, worked fine. New 36gb drive came in, installed it, tried to install X and no go. As I said earlier, I went back to xpostfacto 2.2.2 and it gets to the Installer now. Also, per tempest's suggestion, I put a jumper on "Disable Unit Attention" (if it's the right one. According to the diagram on the IBM drive, it is B, so I put it on the second jumper from the right.) Even though I have done all that, what I am seeing is the same message. It gets all the way to where it says "Easy Install," starts the install, then I get a message that says "Preparing Disk" and then I get a message saying there were errors with the installation and to restart. When I restart I get the gray screen with circle and line! It MUST be a problem with the drive, but I haven't a clue what to do. I have reformatted it using Hard Disk Speed Tools, it is on SCSI ID 1 since the other running OS 9 is on 0, and I've put a jumper on the Disable Unit Attention as suggested. I have no other idea what to do. Just for the hell of it, I tried to install it on my 9gb Compaq drive, which is SCSI ID 0, and I get the same identical message at the same place. |

A minor suggestion but try to install without the video card and then reinstall the card (if that works). BTW, was it 10.2 that you had on the 4 gig drive? |

Okay. I used xpostfacto 2.2.2 instead of 2.2.3 and this time, it launched the Mac OS 10.2 Installer CD with no problem. Went all the way through the installation to selecting the drive I wanted it to install on, clicked "continue" and it started installing OSX. Not even 2 minutes into the install, I got an error message stating there were "Errors with the install" and telling me to restart. I did, and when the screen came up, it was a gray screen with a circle and line through it (like the no smoking signs). Help! This is driving me nuts! I didn't have any problems installing it to the 4gb drive, but installing this 37gb drive and trying to install OS X on it is a nightmare! |

I have no idea what the heck unit-attention is, let alone whether it is disabled. :) If you let me know which jumpers I need to change, I can do that. I just got darn lucky when I set the jumpers the first time. It's currently on ID 1. My other internal is ID 0. And yes, it is an IBM drive. I bought it from here, OWC. :) Thanks! Sherry |

My guess would be termination-related. Is unit-attention disabled if it's an IBM drive? |

Just want to add that I have a similar setup with a 9.1 and 37 Drive with HD Speed Tools on an 8600. I have Jaguar on the 37 and it works fine. |

Are you using a retail version of Jaguar? If the disk is an update disk, then it is looking for a previous version of OS X. If you only have the update version, try installing the 10.1 first. |
