I recently purchased a G3 333MHz tower on eBay; replaced the sczi drive that was in it with 20G ATA drive, partitioned in 3. OS92 installs fine on partition IX; OSX (tried with both 10.1.2 and 10.2; same results) installs on partition X. But system won't boot from partition X. Thanks very much! The disk was set up as a slave on the same cable with the CD, which was set as master. I moved the hard disk to the second cable, set it as master, and all is working as promised. This forum is a great service. Thanks again. Richard |

Hmm. I take it that this is one of the Beige G3's. While supported by Apple for Mac OS X, they do have more problems than other systems. If you search at http://www.macfixit.com, for instance, you'll find a fair number of discussions of Mac OS X on the Beige G3. It sounds like Open Firmware is having trouble accessing the drive. It could be a master/slave issue. If I remember correctly, at least some of the Beige G3's had trouble booting from the slave (or was it the master?). Another question is what you are using to restart into Mac OS X. Are you using the Startup Disk control panel, or XPostFacto? If one doesn't work, it might be worth trying the other. |

Sorry, I must have hit a key that closed the message. The error message I get is "unable to open: mac-io/ide/@1:6" Any suggestions about how to fix it? Thanks. Richard |
