Install 10.1 Error |

Help! I had XPostFacto and OSX.1 installed and running fine on my Mac 9600. Then I decided to try to reinstall on a larger IDE drive (running on a Tempo ATA 100 card)...... and things turned to mush. The install menu for OS X convinced me that the largest partition I could use was 8 gigs.... now I can access that 8 gig partition... but the OS X installer quits with an "Error Installing Software" message.... and then I have to go back through the restart.... kernel panic..... routine..... Other than re-partitioning the same drive, nothing has changed since I was happily using OS X ...... Any ideas? ... Thanks! -Taylor |

Errors once you get to the Mac OS X Installer can have a couple of different causes. It can relate to RAM problems, but that is unlikely in your case, since you have done a successful install of 10.1 before. It can relate to problems writing to the target volume. But since you have just repartitioned, that doesn't seem too likely. It's possible that you are having some trouble with the ATA/100 card, I suppose. Although, if the installer can see the target volume, then the card must be more or less working. I suppose you could try moving the card to a different slot, especially if you have a G4 CPU upgrade--many of the G4 upgrades have problems with the lower three PCI slots on the 9600. It can relate to problems with the Install CD itself--if you can borrow a different CD, that sometimes helps. One thing you can do in the Mac OS X Installer is use the "Show log" menu command. Sometimes that gives some useful information. |
