Just for the people out there who bought the -splendid & fast- working ATTO card for just US$29... DON'T upgrade the firmware to 1.6.4 if you're not using an original G3/G4... This is the comment I got: The newer firmware may not work with the 7500, as it was meant as an update for G3/G4 and newer Macs. I'm enclosing an older version of the firmware for the card, be sure to select option 2 when flashing the card. (See attached file: UL2D144U.hqx) I'm going to downgrade the card from 1.6.4 to 1.4.4... The 1.4.3f is running now in my system.. the upgraded 1.6.4 card causes a serios system error on Finder loading (9.1) OS X booting from it seems a no-no so far... But with the Xpostfacto 2.4.4 and the new Atto firmware.. I will give it another go... I'll keep you posted! /Paul |

OWCÕs OEM ATTO UL2D ...what happens when you use a card that is designed for a G3 Blue & White or G4 (NewWorld OF 3.0+) and use it in legacy systems... I tried using it in 7300 running OS 9.1 and it was okay but not great; then put it into rev A Beige and it was much better - I was able to install and run OS X off IBM OEM Z15 Ultrastar (another topic, selling and using OEM drives and equipment: Disk Warrior 2.2 has trouble with Preview and writing to the drive). Running 10.2.1 off 15K drive in Beige was quite nice - until I upgraded the firmware after running the SCSI hack. That was before I heard about problems upgrading and using later firmware than 1.43 or 1.44. it would be nice to put a nice 10K or faster drive off each channel to get some real performance or use Apple RAID. I have an ATTO UL3S in Blue G3, and ATTO does NOT support that card in B&W running OS X! They had trouble with their 1.64 firmware when Apple came out with 9.2.1 which requires firmware 1.66. Some of the problems that look like an extension conflict can be a conflict with the firmware on the card and Mac OS 9.2.1 or 9.2.2. Freeze on loading Finder on cold start was one symptom. Able to boot from CD or with extensions off. I tested using ExpressTools, Drive Setup, SoftRAID, all had trouble with UL3S and 9.2.1 - IN A BLUE G3 (itÕs a unique bird), but not in newer G4Õs. There was no trouble with OS 9.1. What did 9.2.1 do? I have no idea. Over my head and way too complicated, and took weeks and months to test and prove and then to get a fix. The UL2D OEM is designed for B&W G3 or G4, NewWorld. ÔCourse that wonÕt stop people from trying. Mixing OS, Open Firmware, card firmware, firmware on disk drives is full of conflicts. There is no magic wand (even if it is Halloween) to make it work. ATTO is saying that their UL4 series is what they are supporting for OS X at this point. Mainly ÒAdvanced Power ManagementÓ (deep sleep or even sleep is not supported on Macs that lack this ability, you can wake up to a kernal panic if OS X is running off UL3S/D). And when someone says Òworks or supports OS XÓ - take it with a grain of salt... Gregory |

OSXguru: Can you get someone from OWC customer service to address these issues on this forum? I was considering buying one of these cards, but after seeing all these complaints and no response from OWC, I am hesitating. |

I have this card (and a IBM drive from OWC) and I've been having a lot of issues with it. I upgraded the firmware to the latest version, but after reading this thread, I realoaded 1.4.4. I can only use my IBm 18GB drive when i load up the ATTO tools in OS9, even though IBM says the Apple disk utility should see it. Also, when I try to load the Apple System Profiler in OS9 it freezes solid on the device and volume scan. Somehow, I have to get past these issues before I can move on to 10.2. Please help! |

Anyone know the difference between 1.4.3f and 1.4.4? And does anyone have 1.4.3f handy? |

Here's a link I found. Flashed to 1.4.4 and everything is working great so far. I could even get it to boot before. Was wondering about the 1.5, what that would do ???? http://www.focal.co.jp/1_PRODUCT/ATTO/ |

Can you send that file to me also? I was never able to pinpoint my problems with booting into 9.1 on my computer. I usually pull the drive and put it in my other computer whenever I need to do anything in 9, like using xpf to install 10.2. |

Paul, would you email me a copy of this firmware. I have this card too but am having trouble getting the drives attached to it to mount or even spin up. It is visible in ASP with both channels and the firmware version is 1.4.3f. The only version of the firmware available from the ATTO site that I have found is 1.6.4. |

I've got one of those cards too. Could not get it to work with my 36 gig IBM drive (also from OWC) Reason being that the ATTO card does not work with Hard Disk Speed Tools. The IBM cannot be formatted with Apple HD Utility. HDST does allow me to use the drive in 10.2 with no problem. A Catch 22 situation! However I could not even update the firmware on the ATTO card so it may be a dud anyway. Darn! |
