6500 Further investigations and problems |

I haven't had the time to mess around with this (or a spare hard drive), until recently. Anyway, I installed OS X onto a hard drive and put it in the 6500. I have the necessary OF settings. I even get the gray Apple logo. Then the spinning beach ball (in grayish color) endlessly spins at the upper left hand corner. I flipped into verbose mode. Everything seems to boot up perfectly, "Starting network services, etc" but it never loads the Aqua interface. What could be the problem? I can startup in single user mode without a hitch. Multi user mode seems to work, too, but the Aqua interface doesn't start up. :( I feel like I'm so close to getting this to work. Any ideas? |

It sounds like a problem with the video driver. I have been able to get Aqua to work on the 6500, so it should be possible. (Take a look at my log page for a few more details). One question is which version of XPostFacto you are using. There were a few changes in the latest version (2.2.4) that are helpful for the 6500. Also, which version of Mac OS X are you using? |

hmm... So, it boots fine and gets to "Startup Complete" in verbose mode.. then the screen clears and hangs with a white cursor. The aqua interface doesn't show. :( Any ideas? |

Well, here's what happens: If I got into verbose mode, it will run through the startup. Eventually it will get to the "Starting Network Services", "Starting IP Firewall", etc.. stage... It will go on to the "Starting NetInfo", etc.. portion after that. The last thing it says is "Startup Successful". Then the screen will clear and a white cursor will appear. If I'm not in verbose mode, I get the spinning beach ball in the upper left forever. I already used setup assistant on the other computer, so an account has been created on this OS X installation. |

OSX before 10.2.x does a very very very long pause starting up and again at log in if there is an ethernet cable plugged in but no internet services availble through that cable. Your mention of "starting network services" reminded me of that. |

Could it be related to the thread titled "VERY interesting startup problem" ? i.e. Setup Assistant not working? |
