Why do I get choppy (dropped frames) on my DVD playback. I have a 9600 with 780 megs, RAGE 128 card and the Sonnet 800 MHZ card. |

I did a clean install of 10.2 again last night and then upgraded to 10.2.2 I did not install the ATI driver update. I did have to copy the ATI ROM Xtender file over from 9.2.2 though. IE6 had that problem with artifacts under the cursor when moving over text. On the DVD playback front there was no improvement playing the LOTR DVD main menu. It still stutters. Movie playback seems better though. There is something in the 10.2.x.x updates that is the culprit. As long as the movies themselves play cleanly I can live with this issue. |

Thanks. That worked perfectly. Playback is not choppy like it is with VideoLan client. |

I should report that 10.2.2 did not resolve the degraded menu playback of the LOTR DVD. It did install new versions of the ATI drivers. They are now at v. 1.2.6. I'm going to do another clean install and update to 10.2.1 but not install the ATI update to see what happens. I suspect that playback will be as good as it was before I installed the ATI issued drivers. |

This may be more clear. Go to macbidouille.com and search for either "cocoa no DVD" or use the full name of the file listed in the post below. |

You need to get the patch from macbidouille.com, a french website. It is called DVDPlayer_3.2_no_DVD_Cocoa. Here is a link: DVD Player_3.2_no_DVD_Cocoa.sit |

Hey, How did you get your DVD player to work? I have an 8600 with G4/400 and ATI Radeon. I got DVD player to work with OS 9, and I've managed to get it installed on 10.2. But when I start it up it quits and tells me it found no DVD drive I have a Panasonic LF-D101 DVD-Ram drive. |

The October ATI driver release is definitely the cause of my DVD playback performance drop. As I said previously, I'm using the Lord of the Rings DVD as a test because it has a very elaborate menus with all sorts of animations running. On a clean OSX 10.2.1 install the DVD begins playing and the menu animation is smooth. After installing the 10-29-02 re-release, as well as the original October release of the ATI drivers, the LOTR DVD menu playback stutters and has sound dropouts. The movie itself plays OK though. From side-by-side comparisons of running the DVD on separate installations on different partions, one with Quartz Extreme enabled, the inhibiting factor again turns out to be the ATI driver update. Has anyone else seen similar results? I'm hoping that 10.2.2 when it comes out will resolve this issue. |

I reinstalled OS X and the DVD player... I am comparing the smoothness of the playback as I write this... The OS 9 player still seems to operate ALOT faster... |

I finally got around to installing the DVD player again and editing the ToshibaCDR.device-plugin file for my DVD/CD-RW player last night. As I thought it would, playback was flawless running on just the drivers installed by 10.2. The Lord Of The Rings DVD menu which was choked performance before was played smoothly. Next thing to do is install the ATI October update again to see what happens. |

I have a Toshiba SD-R1202 DVD/CD-RW (16x10x40 +12x DVD) connected to an Acard ATA 133 card. Playback is still more or less smooth but I have noticed a degredation in performance (occasional dropped frame) since installing the ATI October update. My graphics card is a Radeon Mac Edition 32MB card, Quartz Extreme has been enabled since the instructions for modifying the Configuration.plist file were posted at Arstechnica. I have 1Gig of RAM installed, and the system is driven by a Sonnet G4 800. The machine itself is a Power Tower Pro. The ATA card is in the 1st PCI slot. |

Neither one of you say what kind of DVD drive you have or how it is connected.... I have a SCSI DVD drive in my G3/400 with a Radeon PCI and it plays smoothly with 10.21. |

I have experienced the same thing since upgrading to the October ATI drivers. With the previous July and the 10.2 drivers playback was quite smooth and I saw only an occasional dropped frame. I reinstalled 10.2.1 to a separate partition last night to test whether it was the driver update or not that caused the drop in performance. I have a Power Tower Pro with 1Gig RAM, Radeon Mac Edition 32MB, and Sonnet G4 800. |
