Goofy behavior on Jaguar Kanga |

First, great work Ryan! I didn't think that this old PB would ever run X. After some glitches in the install, I finally got Jaguar up and running. In hindsight, I think my installation problems were due to power management issues rearing its ugly head, and not BootX or XPF. This may be true for others with install issues. Anyway, after reboot at the end of the first disk's install, I was greeted mostly by panicks during initial boot. The gray "Apple" screen would become corrupted. Switching into verbose mode would show me that the kernel did indeed panick, and then it would throw the same screen corruption as in the graphics mode (vertical garbled lines). Re-blessing with my OS 9 CD and re-installing the extensions from XPF 2.2.4 (earlier ones didn't work), enabled me to reboot correctly so that I could finish my install on the second disk. Now, if I leave the machine idle for more than five minutes, the next cursor move or keypress causes all applications to quit, the cursor to go to the rainbow spinny thingie, and possibly switch to a black text console screen saying something about dsk0s9 not being found or something. Sometimes, this happens if I'm still actively using the machine. I'd post a log with this message, but it has yet to show up in a system log. I've turned off all power management (sleep never) in OS 9 as well as OS X, and told X not to sleep the hard drive whenever possible, to no avail. Finding the note about not upgrading past 10.1, I replaced ApplePMU.kext version 1.6.2 with version 1.0 from the 10.0 CD, to find the same exact behavior. In hindsight, I also had flakey similar behavior under 10.0.4, but chalked it up to it being 10.0.x. This may be a lingering side-effect of the O'Hare code, as I hear my hard disk spin back up, immediately prior to this crash. Likewise, the screen sometimes returns from the console to a graphics screen w/spinny, but any hope of other functionality returning with it has been lost. Has anyone had similar experiences? Should I just remove the ApplePMU.kext and hope that the OpenPMU.kext will pick up the slack? Is there anywhere else that I have to change my power settings (plist)? -- Len |

about the clock problem: in fact I do not really know why - but after some reboot in OS 9.1 with at least one PMU reset the clock is back running. I did not boot in OS X again since, but surely I will try any update of XPF greetings from andreas! |

Last week, I inadvertantly reset my PMU while repairing one of the pop-out feet on the back of my kanga. Now, I don't have any sleep issues, it just doesn't sleep. Unfortunately, my new levels of uptime have uncovered a nasty little demon that's hiding in my ethernet connection. Without warning, my network connection will just drop completely. If I use 'ifconfig', it acts like nothing is wrong. Ping, and all other network programs won't work, even with straight ip number addresses. Cycling my connections up and down through ifconfig or the Network pane have no affect. Oh, I have the modem/ethernet connector on the back of my Kanga. -- Len |

It certainly sounds like some kind of PMU issue. It might help to reset the PMU. If I remember correctly, the way to do that is to shut down, and then find the thin vertical button on the back panel. Hold that button in for about 30 seconds or so, and then let go. Let me know if that helps. Getting OS X running on the Kanga's is still a bit of an adventure, even with XPostFacto's help :-) |

I wanted to post the same clock problem on my Kanga, I could not find any solution yet. Somehow the clock seems to work though. When booting in OS X the time is correct and the menubar clock works normal. Back in OS 9 I face the the stuck clock again just as described by Len |

One other goofy thing is when I go back into OS 9.1, my menubar clock is stuck at whatever time the machine was started at. Opening some programs will get it to update to a new time, but then it just freezes at that point in time. Also the menubar battery charge icon disappeared. I was able to put the battery back up there by turning it back on in the Date and Time control panel (it took me a while to make that connection). But the clock still doesn't tick, no matter what options I turn on or off. -- Len |
