does 10.2 just have a slow boot or is something wrong? Verbose mode gives me another "section" of the boot prosses. in the beginning it is telling me it is trying to load different hfs+ files. during the first part of this "section" if fails the other half it passes. this alone adds about 1 -2 min to my boot time. then there are other delayes that take about another min. so my boot time is around 5-6min when before it was well less than 2. whats wrong?? and on top of that my firewire drives dont load all the time and i cant go to the disk uttility because it does not even see them. so i have to reboot! it can take 12 min just to get everything right! |

After reinstalling the extentions and bootx and using the verbose command from with in xpostfacto i don't get the loading hfs+... text and it zipps to the other part. I still have the problem at /dev/disk1s6 on / (loacl) I think by running the Unix check it will help this. Thanks |

FYI This is happening to me occasionaly. It seems that 10.2 has some bugs that cause various cache files to become corrupted. Corrupted cache files seem to be causing the "Jaguar Under Glass" problem as well. With an XLR8 g3 400mhz, rebuidling the extensions cache takes a very very very long time, but afterwards doesn't usually recur for awhile. If I don't find a thread regarding the "Jaguar Under Glass" issue, I'll start one for discussing it. Keep up the good work Ryan. SMT |

I always have a slow boot. I started to use sonnet's cache enabler because it kicks in sooner. it did help but it kicks in after the loading hfs+ files. I have also noticed it is slow when loading: /dev/disk1s6 on / (local) thanks |

The messages you are getting about loading hfs+ files and some failing and some succeeding is normal. It just should be happening faster than it is. I have been experiencing the slow boot process when using an ATA card with Mac OS X 10.2, but only if the extensions cache is out of date, so that BootX has to load each extension file (rather than just loading the cache). This happens much slower than it should, at least with my ATA card. (When I tried on the SCSI bus, it was at normal speed). One possibility is that the Open Firmware drivers for (some) ATA cards are just slow. This is possible--if I understand Open Firmware correctly, it does not do direct memory transfers--everything is in polled mode. (But I could be wrong about that). In any case, if you have the same problem, then rebuilding the extensions cache should help. And this should be done automatically as part of the boot process. Are you finding that you always have a slow boot, or just sometimes? |
