I tried to run XPF on my 3400c/180 80/3GB, it has the combo modem/ethernet card. I have tried both 2.2 and 2.2.4 with OS X 10.0, 10.1 and 10.2, to no avail. I can get as far as rebooting from XPF to install, and then I get a kernel panic while it is booting, followed by the machine powering off. The panic is shortly after the message: Register ApplePMU to acknowledge power changes In 10.0 I get the following stack trace: Unresolved kernel trap(cpu 0): 0x300 Data access DSISR=0x40000000 DAR=0x02020216 PC=0x001cf73c, MSR=0x00009030 generating stack backtrace prior to panic: backtrace: 0x001cf73c 0x001cf728 0x001cf7ac 0x001cf888 0x001d60c0 0x001d66f0 0x0026b168 0x001f0c80 0x0009e3b0 0x001c7f00 0x0018ee50 0x00038cb0 0x00037430 0x00037364 panic(cpu 0): 0x300 Data Access (it powers off before I can capture any more) and 10.1 gives me the following: panic(cpu 0): thread_invoke: preemption _level 1 Latest stack backtrace for cpu 0: Backtrace: 0x0008122c 0x000815cc 0x00027d38 0x00032eb8 0x00033518 0x0002dbe0 0x0005cd8c 0x0008a978 0x0008e82c Proceeding back via the exception chain: Exception state (sv=0x080a1800) PC=0x0004135C; MSR=0x00009030; DAR=0x02020202; DSISR=0x40000000; LR=0x00041344; R1=0x046003560; XPC=0x0000000c (0x300 - Data access) Backtrace: 0x00041344 0x0006a884 0x00067910 0x0005cdc0 0x0008a978 0x0008e82c Exception state (sv=0x087bf000) PC=0x0008f540; MSR=0x00009030; DAR=0x0881a928; DSISR=0x42000000; LR=0x002c6344; R1=0x04603900; XPC=0x0000000c (0x300 - Data access) Backtrace: 0x013f1600 0x002c5274 0x002cbefc 0x002cd5ec 0x002bf4e4 0x002bf8b4 0x001ca6c4 0x001ca658 0x001ca7dc 0x001bd1ec 0x001be2e4 0x001be9e4 0x001aec58 0x00033400 0x0008c378 Exception state (sv=0x08254800) PC=0x00000000; MSR=0x0000d030; DAR=0x00000000; DSISR=0x00000000; LR=0x00000000; R1=0x00000000; XPC=0x00000000 (Unknown) (it powers off before I can capture any more) Does anyone have insight as to why I am having no luck? -Scott |

Good call, lje6. I have not had a main battery in my powerbook for years (I just use it plugged in). I put the main battery in, and voila, no panic. -Scott |

Oh, one other thing. If your NVRAM battery is dead or dying, you will probably have to re-install BootX and the extensions every time you start-up. I had my PB apart yesterday to fix one of the extending feet. When I put everything back together, I just got kernel panics when trying to boot into OS X. Aparently when I had my main battery disconnected, the NVRAM backup battery was unable to provide enough charge to keep everything saved. Reinstalling BootX and the extensions fixed things for me, and now I'm hapily in OS X. -- Len |

10.1.5 works on my PB3400 with 80Mb RAM. I agree with lje6 about the rest. |

I had quite a few kernel panics when first installing on my Kanga (A.K.A 3500) with XPF 2.2.0 and 2.2.3. Versions 2.2.1 and 2.2.4 worked much better for me, but I had to explicitly select "Install extensions" and "Install BootX" to overwrite the previous versions. I just posted yesterday about my troubles with ApplePMU.kext on this machine. 10.2 won't work on your machine though, as the Jaguar kernel does not include code that will run on the PPC 603 chip. You may need more memory for 10.1. I was able to get 10.0 to install with only 32 Meg. of RAM, but 10.1 wouldn't even enter the installer until I upgraded to 160 Meg. of RAM. I didn't try with 80 Meg, so it may work. 10.0.4 on 32 Meg. was painfully slow, but it still worked. |
