hi all i just successfully install os x 10.1.5 on a what was previously a PowerComputing PowerTower 166. But, now that i've attempted to enable the L2 cache it will not start. here's the details: hardware: PowerTower 166, 400 megahetz NewerTech Maxpower G3 card, 9gig IBM drive with mac os 9.1 and max os 10.1.5, 2gig IBM drive with mac os 9.1 installed, Zip100, Kinston EtherRx VP 110 Ethernet card, ATI Rage 128 video card, combo Firewire/USB card, 384mb ram, external SCSI CD-R. sypmptoms: i first installed from an os x 10.1.3 using XPostFacto to boot it up. it worked flawlessly. i then ran the software update from the system preferences serveral times, until everything was up to date. i then set the 2gig drive as the start up drive so that i could run GrabL2CacheSetting and get cache setting. this seem to run fine. then i set the startup drive back to the drive with os x on it. but, since i have tried to restart the machine i have only gotten a black screen. not even a sad mac. nothing. when i push the power button i immideatly hear the startup sound and then get nothing but a black screen. i have tried un-plugging it - as soon as i plug it back in i get the startup sound without pushing the startup button, but nothing comes up on screen. so i have tried booting from diferent drives, and i have even pulled all the additional drive off the scsi chain and tried to restart we only one of these drive at a time, including the cd. i have also tried to plug the monitor into the built video. any suggestions? thanks, rajendra |

Um that should not have helped it boot. when you reordered the scsi devices thats what did it. verbose just tells you whats going on as the system boots. Do you have your cache enabled correctly in os9? if you have had the card for a while and have on from 8 to 9 or had to reinstall 9 and frogot to reinstall you software for your card then it won't see any cache data to inport. |

ok...some how that helped. i also reorderd some of the deveices in the scsi chain. now i am able to boot into os x. yippie! but, the L2 cache does not seem to be configured. when i open L2CacheConfig it allows me to import the saved config file. but, it doesn't seem to take. the Cache Status box still reads that the cache is not enabled and there is no info in the Imported Settings box.... |

Well you HAVE to use Xpostfacto to go from 9 to 10. In the Advanced menu (i think) there should be a verbose option, check it and reboot (with XPostFacto). if we are lucky a lot of text should roll on to the screen and suddenly stop with something like 'we are hanging here'. if that happens copy what it says and send it in. |

...well, i zapped the pram, so now it will boot up from the drive that only has 9.1 on it. but, when i try to boot from the drive with os x on it i still get the black screen. i've tried both using XPostFacto to specify the os x drive and simply setting the startup drive in the startup conrol panel. hmmmmm..... |
