No Ethernet found on my PB G3 original |

Hello dear all of you, this is Andreas, if someone could give me a hint what to do, I'd be so glad. I sucessfully installed OS X and upgraded it until 10.1.5 (with some troubles, but at last it worked) on my PowerBook G3 Original alias Kanga using several versions of XPostFacto, at last 2.2 I partitionated my 5GB disc and I have all possible 160mb of physical RAM installed. By the way, even my Macally USB Cardbus card (which I had to treat mechanically to fit in the slot) works perfectly well. But Internet is a problem (since I have no internal modem and the PCMCIA modem causes a kernel panic) but most of all, the network pane does not recognice the built-in ethernet, it does not even show. So no way to get on the net in OS X with my normal ADSL account - or is there a solution? |

I've a long time problem like yours on my PB G3 original, I'm from Italy and as far as I know here we only have 'ethernet-only' configurations. Maybe all european Original G3s are all 'ethernet-only'. I tried to install MacOS X Server but it is impossible, because the ethernet is at the core for Server to functionning properly and installer hangs on at network config stage without finishing. With MacOS X Client instead I can install every kind of upgrade from 10.1, and even Jaguar runs fine (except for ethernet), and I'm able to connect to the net via a PCMCIA 'traditional' modem, who is recognized by kernel (I have an old motorola gsm pc card). I know we have a problem with the ethernet DEC chip who has an unrecognized SROM format (as you can see in verbose kernel splash screen). As Linux runs fine on our PBG3 ethernet, I think that the Tulip driver is suitable for our configuration. Themore I have to say that a porting of Tulip exists for BSD (and Darwin is derivated and compatible) and maybe if someone knows how to do that (if it can be done) the tulip driver could be integrated as a Kext or Kld module into MacosX... waiting for that patch, good bye Kronos |

Hello OSXGuru, unfurtunately I think I have the ethernet only connector. My Kanga was built in Ireland for Austria and there is no built in modem, just a PCMCIA card. After posting this question to the forum I went on reading for some hours to realise that I am not the only one having this problem. So I hope with others that you find a solution for this. In the meantime: thank you for all your work and support! |

Some of the Kanga's had "ethernet-only" connectors at the back, and others had the combo "ethernet-modem" connector. If you have the "ethernet-only" connector, then it just isn't working with Mac OS X yet--it's a problem with the driver. It's something I hope to fix yet, but it's very hard to say when that might happen. If you have the "ethernet-modem" connector, then it ought to work--let me know if that is the case. |
