Last night and tonight I tried another XpostFacto install of Jaguar and in both cases a screen full of text stalls with the line: Still waiting for the root device. It waited all night. I reformatted the disk, reinstalled OS 9.1 and Classic and looked at the disk with Nortons 6. After the disk was error free, I tried XPF and AGAIN got the same message: Still waiting for the root device. Any ideas about other options to get this install unstuck? S900, Sonnet G4, 1GB Ram 40 GB IBM HD Sonnet Tempo ATA 66 The same configuration for my other S900 worked OK with XPF and the present S900 that's stuck had OS 10.2 installed before but now still waiting for the root device. Help! I stopped the stalled install. There were 2 folders so I trashed those in waiting for any ideas about the stalled install. Thanks very much. Eric |

Yes, But you have to use Apple Software Restore to do it. I don't know exactly why. Rayn Told me about it when i install X on my computer. Jim |

Hi Jim, Are you saying to copy the CD contents to a HD partition and select that with XPF to install to the OS X partiton? Could you also copy the CD contents to another HD and install from that? Never thought about doing that. Thanks. Eric |

Thanks Jim. I took the easy way out. I switched CD ROM players from one S900 to my other S900. That worked or I should say is now installing. The CD player (new) that failed had installed OS 9.1 and ran other install SW. Actually this new CD player has a different face plate and there's no light, volume control or headphone jack. Fry's was a wash as far as CD player shopping goes but they were kind enough to tell me to go to a Mac store down the street. I'd never been there before and only had a vague idea about the store. 1-800 WE Fix macs is a hole in the wall store on El Camino in Palo Alto but they do sell Sonnet hardware like the 800 MHz version and mainly fix Macs like $ 45 to install a ram stick. I should be filthy rich by now! Naw, it's for the jollys. Thanks. Eric |

Waiting for root device usually mean what your starting up off of is not compatable. If your like me (J700) and had the stock CDROM that is not supported then you get that message. there are two ways around this: get a new CDROM or use the Apple Software Restore to restore your installer disk to a diffrent partition of you HD then using that as the installer CD.(just select the HD from XPF as you would the CD. note- the CD and HD will have the same names so you should eject the CD so you don't accedentaly select it again) Good luck!
