I'm hoping someone can help me. I'm trying to install OS X (Jag) on my upgraded J700. I've got a NewerTech G3/366 (running at 400), and ATI Rage 128 card, an Apple Branded Barracuda 1 gig SCSI hd and an 18gig WD Scsi hd, a Toshiba CD-ROM and 304 mg RAM. I can't get the install cd to boot, let alone install. Because I had to use FWB CD driver for the internal I borrowed an external SCSI Apple CD600e CD-rom hoping that OS X disk would recognize it. I've tried lowering the throttle down and de-interleaving the RAM. No luck. Is it because of all the unsupported peripherals? Anything else I should try? |

I have no idea about your password thing but you could try nothing. if that does not work make a new topic because your more likely to get a better responce that way. |

Well it did work. It installed ok to the WD and is booting from it too, so I am very pleased. Mind you it was an extremely slow install - had to leave it running for hours last night - just went to bed and checked on it this morning. A couple of questions though: I was so please and incredulous it was actually installing I didn't think the install through - did a full install with all the local install files. Anyway I can delete them after the fact? Also, it is asking me for a user password - I don't remember setting one. I went to bed remember?? I tried all my usual suspects but nothing is working. How do I reset the password? |

I have a J700 and it runs great! (maybe thats just the G4 400) anyway i thing you should be able to download their free trial version (if they still have it) to get the instellation. but after 60days (i think) booting into 9 and having 9 see it.... After the instellation you might try just re-installing the extentions and bootX. Just a thought because I have HDST (FWB was 50$ for every update!) |

I have been trying to install to the bigger drive (WD) because the other doesn't have enough room for OSX. However, I think that is the problem. in Verbose mode it was saying no HFS volume found. The WD was formatted with FWB because Apple Drive wouldn't recognize it. So I indicated on xpf install to use the smaller drive, and now it is booting into OSX! However, I then instructed OSX installer to install onto the WD. i'ts now slowly running the installation. Given the comments that FWB formatted drives won't work, is the problem that OS X can be installed onto them, but they just won't boot from them after installation? Or will it refuse to even install to a FWB drive. I have to agree with the other writer - I had to spend $60 ($90 Cdn), just to format a drive. Looks like I may have to if I want Jag on the j700. BTW, how slow will Jag be on this j700? |

Well the ATI RAge 128 needs to be in the PCi slot 1 or 2 otherwise it's not going to work. This is the slots to the far right in the J700 labeled A and B I think. Also in XPFacto at the top under I think advanced settings set input to keyboard and output to your ATI video card. What did you format your hard disks with? It won't work if your using FWB. Needs to be Apple drive setup or Intech's hard drive speedtools a good product but most people will do well with the free Apple Drive setup. That's all i can think of right now. Best of luck Will S PS OSX runs great on my J700! |
