Blank Screen / RAM Question |

My system is a PowerMac 7300/200. 1024mb RAM, 36GB IBM 10000RPM UltraStar 73LZH, Stock CD and floppy, Orange Micro Firewire/UBS 2.0 card, Belken USB 1.1 card, OS 9.2.2. When I try to install OS X onto my 6gb "Mac OS X" partition from a 10.1.3 OEM disk, XPF will copy files all right then reboot. When it reboots, I get a blank screen, or a screen full of garbage if I set XPostFacto to Open Firmware > output-device > monitor. It would work fine on my old 500mb Quantum HD pulled from a Performa 467. When I upgraded to my IBM drive, I had no software to partition with, so I changed a copy of Drive Setup with Resedit. It recognizd my drive after I changed ID 498 in fSCR from "IBM*" to "ZJCR*". ("ZJCR" is what the drive reports as its manufacturer.) I then made an 8gb "Mac OS 9" partion, a 6gb "Mac OS X" partition, and a 20gb "Stuff" Partition. I dont know if it not being a Drive Setup supported drive has anything to do with it. How could I get the installer to run? Question 2: I read an article on LowEndMac that says 4k refresh RAM wont work with X. When I bought my RAM from OWC, I asked if it was compatible and they said, "Yes." The RAM is "4k refresh, 2k per bank." Does that mean that it will work since the banks are 2k, or does that mean I have to complain to OWC to take it back? |

I have a pair of those OWC 128M, 4K refresh (2K/bank) DIMMs. Tried them in both a PowerMac 7200 and a 9500 and either one of them or both bring down both machines. No boot tone, no screen, just the drive spinning up. Tried each of them one at a time, tried them together interleaved and together non-interleaved. Any combo kills both machines. Just sent in an RMA request to OWC to return them. Ramjet, whose memory has always worked in my Macs, claims that 64M/2K refresh is the largest DIMM that will work with G3/G4 upgrade cards. Their 64M modules work flawlessly with both of my Sonnet G4 upgrades in both the 7200 and 9500. Of course, they're much more expensive than OWC's DIMMs. Read into that what you want but I've had it with OWC memory. Three RMA's and exchanges, only to have problems over and over again. |

I have six sticks of the OWC 4k refresh RAM that I've bought during the last year, and two sticks of straight 2k refresh RAM. As far as I can tell there are no compatability problems associated with it. What make and model processor are you using? From experience, I believe the XLR8 G4's have trouble if you have more than one pair of the 4k refresh ram installed. Doesn't matter whether they are interleaved or not. I don't know off hand which version of drive setup I'm using. It's whatever version came with OS 9.1. You could download the 9.2.1 or 9.2.2 update and extract a legitimate copy of drive setup with Tome Viewer and try again. I'm assuming the modified drive setup is at fault here. |

Well the problem in opinion is with the disk formating. I do not think that your ram has the problem. Eatch ID in the fSCR resource has some other data that describes your disk. Do you know if your disk is compatible with these settings that the IBM* has?? Also you need a new version of the Drive setup for install the OS X. I personally use the 2.0.7 |

I have 3 128mb for OWC. i forget if they are 2k or 4k but they work. How old was the artical? I don't think they ever take articals off that site. I think that you are asking that because your disk is not supported by 9 you are having problems installing x. Most of the time to install you need to have the drive set up with eather drive set up or HDST to get X to install. What does the garbage say? |
