CANT RESTART OS X AFTER OS 9 ON POWER WAVE |

Dear OS X Guru and other forum experts: I have installed OS X onto a Power Computing PowerWave with an 800mhz Sonnet PCI cpu and ATTO UL3D scsi card, but the reboot characteristics are unreliable. OS X runs well, but if I have to boot in OS 9 for any reason, I cannot reboot OS X afterwards. The only remedy I have found is to reformat the OS X drive, and re-install. Re-installing is difficult, often getting `can't open ATTO Express PCI UL3D' messages in verbose mode.....after many repetitions and reformatings, installing will work again. (Hard Disk Speed Tools formatting does not seem to work. Just Apple Disk Setup formatting. Is there a reason for this?) Is there a way to remedy this reboot problem without having to go through all of the above? Also...once back in OS X, is it possible to bypass the `waiting for network initialization' message which causes a long delay in the OS X startup sequence? This forum is very much appreciated! Thank you everyone for your generosity! Cheers, Gerry Kopelow |

boot-device setting |

One thing that I would like to figure out is whether XPostFacto is getting the boot-device setting correct for the ATTO card. It looks like XPostFacto is parsing the boot-device as: PCI 1/ATTOExpress pro, /@12:6 which doesn't look quite right. For one thing, it should be pci1 at the beginning (not all cap, and no space). And the comma and spaces in the next part look odd as well. Also, as another poster said, remember that Apple's Startup Disk control panel in Mac OS 9.x does not work to switch back to Mac OS X on unsupported machines. You need to use XPostFacto to do that (or something like System Disk, as was pointed out). |

ATTO says that the UL3D is not supported on oldworld machines. That may be the cause of your trouble right there. You don't need to use XpostFacto to reboot into OSX every time. The early installtion instructions that Ryan published to to a manual install of OSX (berfore Unsupported Utility X and before XpostFacto), called for using the System Disk control panel that comes with Darwin. I've been using System Disk 3.3.1 since I first installed OS X 10.1. It works everytime. It sets up NVRAM properly so I can cold boot directly to OSX. You can get it by downloading a copy of Darwin and I've seen it as a separate download in Apple's FTP servers. I just don't remember where at the moment. |

The delay when the "waiting for network initialization" message appears is most often due to the fact that your Ethernet interface will be attempting to obtain an IP address via DHCP. If you don't have a DHCP server in your network (e.g. you are not using your Ethernet to connect via a cable or ADSL modem) then you can either remove the Ethernet interface from your network configuration or you can allocate it a static address. The latter option is best if you still need to run AppleTalk over Ethernet to connect to a printer for instance. Both of these options are accessed by opening the Network panel in System Preferences. To disable the interface altogether select "Network Port Configurations" under the "Show" pop-up list and uncheck the appropriate "On" box. To allocate a static IP address, select the Ethernet port from the "Show" pop-up list and select "Manually" from the TCP/IP "Configure" list. If you have more than one Ethernet interface installed then you need to do this for each interface. You may also need to check the caps lock button on your keyboard as it appears TO BE STUCK. |

Thanks, Powderhaus.......when I try to use XPF to start OS X (in verbose mode) I get the message `PCI 1/ATTOExpress pro, /@12:6 can't open'. The ATTO UL3D is my scsi pci card. To get rid of this message in order to install OS X I have to reformat the OS X disk, sometimes several times. Any insights would be appreciated. Gerry |

I had the same problem as you have with you network config. I think the way to solve it is to go under network prefs and it sould have some port selected on the top. (for me it says modem port) Under that there is a configure option(or something of that sort) Take all options that you don't use off. With your other question i have only one tip (for some reason this has been happening alot lately) And that is to make sure you are using XPF to restart you computer into X. you cannot use the change start up disk in os 9 to get to X. you have to open XPF, select your X drive and hit the restart button next to that. |
