OWC Atto UL2D now boots! |

I think it might be acceptable to start a new thread. Ahem... Using 2.2.5b2, this card now boots OSX (10.2, PowerTower Pro, Sonnet G4/800 anyway). I still have firmware 1.4.4(f1) installed. brian.stroud indicates that firmware 1.6.4 also works in 10.2. Can anyone describe if 1.6.4 provides any performance benefit? Thanks OSXGuru! |

If you change the original Apple Firmware 1.4.3f1 that the card comes with you will probably loose the ability to do a OS install from a CD without pulling the card and using the original fast SCSI port. |

I can testify that firmware 1.5 seems to be fine for both OS 9 and OS X on both 7500 and 8500 machines, as long as you use xpf 2.2.5b2 to go from 9 to X. Based on other posts in these forums, I won't go past 1.5 on these real old machines. I am still curious what these firmware upgrades do, and if it is worth the effort and risk to run the upgrades. ATTO has no release notes to speak of for these upgrades. I am still curious if the beige G3 will be OK for both OS 9 and X with firmware 1.6.4. |

You can install any firmware version ... tere are two options: install only newer firmware or install anyway. In the other thread about ATTO, someone said that 1.5 is good for both 9 and X ... I'm still using 1.4.4 ... |

Kbata Try this site: http://www.focal.co.jp/1_PRODUCT/ATTO/ They have several of the firmware. I believe in another forum disucssion there was talk that the firmware could be downgraded. I am still trying to figure out the best firmware for both OS 10.2.x and OS 9.x. Currently my drive still has 1.4.3f1. |

Does anyone have copies of the older firmware for this card. Is it posable to flash the card with an older version of the firmware once it has been flashed with 1.6.4? |

Another success with xPostFacto 2.2.5b2 and ATTO UL2D: 7500 w/Sonnet 800 G4, WD 10krpm 9GB 9150 LVD on ATTO, IBM 80-50pin 36GB running single ended on motherboard scsi. I used Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) to clone the X partition from the IBM to the WD. I kept getting black screen until I did the old world blessing with CCC (thought that was supposed to only be for beige G3). After that, with the OS X startup disk pane from the IBM, or with xPostFacto 2.2.5b2 under OS 9, I can select the WD drive for OS X. Note that Startup Disk 3.3.1 probably won't work, based on previous trials on another machine, because it behaved pretty much like pre-2.2.5 xPostFacto. Definitely peppier with a 10krpm ultrawide LVD drive. But the motherboard's drive seems to have slowed down, especially during booting from the IBM into OS 9, in the presence of the ATTO and WD drives. Any point in upgrading ATTO firmware from 1.4.3f1 to 1.4.4? What are the advertised benefits? Risks? |

Success with 2.2.5b2 PowerMac 7500 Sonnet G4800 768 RAM using ATTO UL2D from OWC with firmware 1.4.3f1. Have 2 Quantum Atlas III 18.2GB connected to the ATTO card booting into OS 10.2.2. Have not tried booting into OS9.x yet but I will transfer my original SCSI drive contents later this weekend. I do not anticipate any problems with the current firmware version. Does anyone know what the benefits are to each of the ATTO firmware updates? I have downloaded all the different formats from 1.4.4 to 1.6.4 but nowhere can I find what features they add or for that matter take away. Thanks Ryan for getting this to work. At this price it sure was hard to pass up getting such fast SCSI performance. I can't believe how faster my system appears to be with this setup. No wonder the price is now going up. Thanks to Larry for keeping the price the same for E-mail subscribers to OWC. Would it be to much to ask for a great deal on an ATTO UL3D as a Christmas wish? |

Paul, My Mac is an 8600 with a Powerlogix G4/450 CPU card, 512MB EDU RAM, OWC ATTO UL2D with 2 Quantum Atlas III 18.2GB hard drives on the ATTO card. It boots OSX 10.2.2 off one of the Atlas drives using the XPF 2.5b2 to set it up. --Dwight |

The other trhead suggests there might be an nv-ram size problem on some machines. Anyone who gets it to work with the present xpostfacto b2, please state the machine. I'll try on my 7500 this weekend. As for the ATTO owc card, it is an apple pull with firmware 1.4.3f1 on it. It is like the ATTO retail, except the internal first channel and external second channel connectors are missing. Why the internal one is numbered as the second channel, I don't know. But that is what I vaguely remember when I looked into it. I don't remember whether the ch numbers are 0, 1 or 1, 2. I don't have it installed right now, so I can't check it. On the assumption that OWC guru will soon have a fix for all old world machines supported by xpostfacto, I just ordered a second ATTO card for my spare mac 8500. By the way, the standard price seems to have gone up to $39, but if you link from OWC Larry's email, it is still $29. Is he raising the std price because of the promise of an xpostfacto fix? Some people have indicated that firmware 1.6.4 is OK for a beige G3 or up. Is that just for OSX, or is it also OK for OS 9 on a beige G3? Would appreciate the info, because my sister has a beige G3, and I'm thinking of making a Xmas gift of a SCSI setup to speed up her machine. |

Well, If is is an OWC like I've got, I will try this again. I hate giving up the speed of this card and the drive access just because it won't boot. This thing is just blazing with the UW SCSI drive and the Atto card. (as Compared to my stock PM7300.) Glad I have a spare drive......I don't want to kill off a working partition on my current drive. |

Well, it's an OWC-sold Atto ($29, see OWC's on-line store). As such, I think they were pulls, which I originally thought had meant they had Apple ROMs. But, they all seem to have the Atto 1.4.4 firmware on them, so I'm really not sure what that means. Sorry, I looked at the card physically when I put it in but I do not remember what tags or logos were on it - now it's all buttoned up. (At any rate, the booting problem appears to have had nothing to do per se with the firmware on the card). |

Is this an Apple UL2D card or a full Atto Card? |

Cool, I'm in Buffalo NY right now, so it's going to be a couple weeks before I can test mine... I wonder if this might also fix the Adaptec Apple OEM'd 2940U2B? I have a sneaking suspicion it might. Marty |
