Relating some of the information learned from the 6400 Zone and my experiences: 128MB cards will work in alchemy based boards but they are only read at 64MB. If I am remembering correctly it is a limitation in the memory controller on the MB and not the chips themselves. I cannot say 100% the TAM has that identical limitation but I am willing to bet it does. The 6400 zone (http://www.zone6400.com/) also has a discussion forum that can be found at (http://www.voy.com/8627/) or by clicking on forums on the main page. Search that forum (yes, some discussion forums are actually searchable...)and you will find plenty of information on the memory limitations of the alchemy boards and what does and does not work. I'll wait to hear back, I won't get access to that TAM until probably after the winter season so I haven't ordered another 64 to make it 128 (96 in it right now). If 256 does work, then I'll go that route. More memory the better :) Thanks. --D |

064MB 168 Pin Mac 5V DIMM 60NS 2K EDO for Apple 54/55/64/65/73/75/76/85/86/95/9600s,6360, 20th Anniversary; Compatible Clones. New with Lifetime Warranty. (OWC5MD064MBE) OWC- These are the same footie prints as the 128's, WITH the same voltage. If I get the TAM, I will try it and post. I have two of these 64's in my 9500 right now. If the 128's don't work in TAM, I will just throw these in..... |

3.3V EDO DIMMs won't fit either way. The ones from my Starmax have different index marks on them so they won't align. I don't see any 5V EDO DIMMs out there either. I'm intrigued if anyone has tried this and managed to get some results or has a similiar architectured system. --D |

TAM 97- March 98 , Powermac G3 97-98 , Imac May 98-, Powermac 8500 95- 97,7200 95-98. Based on the older logic board yes, but still newer than a 8500 or 7200 in production. AW, the picking of the nit:-p |

Checking apple-history.com, that TAM was built in '97. The architecture of the logic board was based on the "alchemy" board mentioned here, which is of the PM5500, an older machine...... Notice the max RAM here...... Codename: Spartacus, Pomona, Smoke & Mirrors CPU: PowerPC 603ev CPU Speed: 250 Mhz FPU: integrated Bus Speed: 50 Mhz Data Path: 64 bit ROM: 4 MB RAM Type: 168 pin DIMM Mininum RAM Speed: 60 ns Onboard RAM: 0 MB RAM Slots: 2 Maximum RAM: 256 MB Level 1 Cache: 16k data, 16k instruction Level 2 Cache: 128 kb DIMM Monitor: 12.1" active matrix LCD Maximum Resolution: 16 bit 800x600 Slots: 7" PCI, comm II, video i/o, TV (filled) Floppy Drive: 1.4 MB SuperDrive Optical Drive: 4x vertical mount CD-ROM Hard Disk: 2.0 GB ATA Bus: ATA ADB: 1 Serial: 2 SCSI: HDI-30 Audio Out: stereo 16 bit mini Audio In: stereo 16 bit mini Speaker(s): stereo (SRS, with subwoofer) Microphone: mono Gestalt ID: 512 Power: 140 Watts Weight: 14.9 lbs. Dimensions: 17.25" H x 16.5" W x 10" D Minimum OS: 7.6.1 Maximum OS: 9.1 Introduced: May 1997 Terminated: March 1998 Although officially produced in celebration of the Twentieth Anniversary of Apple, the 20th Anniversary Mac was released close to a year after the fact, in late Spring, 1997. And a truly unique Mac it was. The Motherboard was similar to that of the PowerMac 5500, and it was based on the same 603e processor, running at 250Mhz. The real innovation of the 20th Anniversary Mac was its unique shape, and advanced sound and video features. It came with an integrated TV/FM Radio System, an S-Video Input, and a custom sound system designed by Bose, with integrated stereo speakers, and a separate sub-woofer (it also included a 33.6Kbps GeoPort modem). The Twentieth Anniversary Mac was a limited edition, and sold for nearly $10,000. Its price was cut to as low as $1,999 and it was discontinued in March 1998. |

The Tam is newer than 7200/8500. It was made and sold while they sold G3's.They only stoped when the Mac went New World. http://everymac.com/systems/apple/ 20th_mac/index.html |

Thanks for the link... My old world stuff starts at the PM 7200, mostly 8500's, so this is a little further back for me. I was in the Pee Cee world back then, I have returned home since then..... droobie.... A lot of sites say the max for an 8500 is 512 megs..... The 128 EDO chips are not "officially" supported. for my 85 and 9500's, I just use the OWC 128 EDO DIMMS. They are cheap and I have had good luck with them. The way I figure it, I will yank some RAM out of my 9500, throw it in, and fire it up to test. I probally WILL be limited to the 64 chips, but what the hell. I will have to do my research since this machine is a little further back on the timeline than what I am used to working on....... |

AS far as I know All 128mb dims that work in a mac are 3.3v memory that is regutated on the dim down from the systems 5v. I've never seen any of the systems that are Tam like that Have 256mb in them, so unless someone here can confirm that it works I still say NO. |

jseibyl, So I don't have to "Reinvent the Wheel", I'll point you to the 6400 zone. http://www.zone6400.com/ If you're not aware of it, this site is dedicated to all machines based on the alchemy boards including the TAM. Do some searching and you'll find the answers you're looking for regarding memory, L2/G3 upgrqades and many other issues with alchemy boards. Scott |

I saw on a website that the max is 256mb on the TAM, but I found a lot more sites that say 128 is the max. The Sonnet G3/500 card I managed to get from Macconnection (in stock even) for < 250 bucks. Man, the TAM screams now. I set this up for someone who bought one back when they were like 8 grand. He's happy. It would be very interesting to see OS X on though. I've been trying to get it onto my Kanga G3 but with only 64mb of RAM it isn't happening. Spose I'll be looking for a 128mb chip for it, even though it's going to cost me 70-90 bucks for it. Is there even a 128mb EDO 5V DIMM out there? I'd assume the max memory the system architecture can hold is the same as the Tanzania boards, 160mb. Density requirements and such aside, of course. --D |

Never seen a TAM that would take 128MBx2 but I could be wrong. That's the real hold-back of these systems as far as OS X goes. I Still want one. |

I might be getting a TAM, what a cool machine! Looks like the L2 G3 upgrade will be a lot easier than an 8500. Any quirks I should know about the Sonnet g3 card?? Can I throw 2 128 EDO DIMMS into it??? Also, about bringing it up to OS 9...If I get it, I want to bring it 9.2.2, is there anything I should know...universal install, special hardware considerations, etc?? Any input will be helpful.THANKS in advance.... Jim |
