I, for one would love a search function. No matter how primative it would be. That said It seems that the real issue is OWC and their committment to the forum. Ever notice the banner at the top of each page of this forum. It is a link to OWC's shopping pages. Their interest is in selling upgrades for our old macs and supporting Ryan serves their purpose. (A win-win situation IMHO). •Do you ever see Larry's comments in this forum? As president he frequently comments in Deal Mac's forum. Maybe we need to get his attention. •If this forum went to another format (like SimpleForum) could OWC's banners be at the top? OWC is in the business to sell stuff. •Unless they can be convinced that changing the format to support searches will sell more stuff I see no hope of getting their cooperation. Sharing our frustrations with each other seems to be ineffective. Look at all the old posts about search functions. I don't think that Ryan has any control over this. Perhaps what we need is to bring our concerns to OWC in an organized manner (e mail campaign???). There usualls is strength in numbers. |

willschou1, please keep your insults and stupid comments to yourself; I, and others as well have made a valid request, which Ryan and OWC are free to ignore - as are you. Please do, something more constructive and useful, you seem to have some experience and time on your hands. |

Yes xpf is priceless. I, for one, am glad that it exists and works so well... never more so than when I have to boot back into OS9 for something which doesn't work in Classic. But not being able to search for the problems similar to mine and the solutions for them is certainly hugely frustrating. Not to mention time consuming. I understand that owc may not be making any money from this forum - directly or indirectly. And they may not be able to invest in the time required to improve it (even if the forum software is free). But what if they upped the fee to $15? Could they do it then? |

Time to remind people the software is free and we are more then lucky to have it at any price IMHO. The big bucks you paid are to help keep this website up. You really think $10.00 pays for this website forever?!!! I for one will choice that Ryan works on the next version of XPFacto 3.0 when he has time rather then waste time and limited resources on a search function. Yes, it would be nice but if we don't have time and money to get out the next version of XPFacto I say let it go for now. The newbies and layzies can just spend sometime digging though and quit the bitching ;-) |

Since this forum is all about running OSX why don't OWC do the decent thing and transfer to OSX and run a FREEWARE product called SimpleForum which is available at http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/18386 This would give us the search function we need and could hardly be rejected on the grounds of cost. That way we could at least help each other out efficiently while we wait for the next version of XPostFacto to appear. |

OK, it appears that other than a rather perfunctory posting of his already posted statement of busy-ness, Ryan will not respond at this time to this specific forum topic. As for the OWC-webmaster, it appears they too are MIA. |

The google site search engine function would not work for the same reason the offline browsing downloads fail. I do not have the time to individually search and download pages of topics to reformat into a database program for searching. As I am limited to a manual search of the most recent pages and topics, I will make do with that(as everyone else has had to do) and feel my $10.00US was spent to support the forum and Ryans sw development; that still allows for criticism about the forum and it function/s. That criticism everyone seems to agree on. |

I agree with Will on this one. Search would be great, but even without this forum is useful and worth it to me. Thanks Ryan! Marty PS I wonder if we could just use google to search like xlr8yourmac.com does. |

quote: "Please, accept that I did not "bitch", nor did I say I felt "ripped off"." Please reread your first post.I'm not trying to start a flame war. I'm sorry you clearly feel you wasted your money. We are lucky to have what we have let alone expect more for free or nearly free.I'm sorry it's too much trouble for you to go through the availabe posts without a search engine. Many of us have managed to do so.I rest my case. |

Actually I was able to copy and paste the topics to a spreadsheet in Appleworks and they are searchable rather primitive but it did make finding related topics easier, but the positions are relitive since posts move as they are added to. Jim |

Please, accept that I did not "bitch", nor did I say I felt "ripped off". Where the assumption of a suggestion for a fulltime person to answer question comes from, I'd love to have pointed out. Also, I understand Ryan's employment situation as he has explained it, and the conditions of use attached to his free software. The fact that some questions and answers may be irrelevent to my interest are precisely the reason I would like to see a search function at this forum. It remains to be seen how irrelevent my topic is now becoming to others. |

First off your right it would be nice to have a search feature at this forum. Second I'm sorry to see a bitch topic posted here. The software being given away for free is nearly priceless. Most people would need to buy a new machine to run OSX if it weren't available. So to say you feel ripped off is a bit much to take ! and outragous IMHO! To have a full time person here to answer questions that are sometimes in fact rather lame would cost a lot more then most people would be willing to pay.In time they may well be able provide the search feature. In the mean time Ryan is as he expalined busy with his real job but will be back and working on XPFacto 3 as soon as possible. |

I have also tried to download the files in the directory of the forum for offline browsing(which might allow for some kind of text searches) but this is not possible either; for some reason the program is blocked from just those directories-even with L/P codes. So overall, I feel terribly cheated. Really, it's unfortunate, since as you say many have contributed their hard won experience and insights to this forum, which I have paid to access, and I'm being prevented from doing so in a reasonable and forthright manner. |

Ironically, if you were able to search this forum you would find dozens of requests for a search function to be added. Ryan's usual response is that he'll talk to the guys who actually run the OWC server, but for reasons best known to them they never seem to either do anything about it or explain why it's not possible. I can sympathise with newcomers to the forum who now find it impractical to trawl through all the posts to find useful information about their problems. It's also frustrating for all the people who have put in a lot of effort to provide solutions to problems to know that their work is now being wasted. Once again OWC please, please, please give us a search function or at least tell us why you won't! |
