Thanks for the Apple technote URL. With it I've succeeded in getting debug information. There were two problems: one was that 38400 baud was needed, and the other that the I can not use the modem port for both input and output (I have to use the keyboard for input and the modem for output). With this I see the following error from the open firmware prompt when trying to boot from the 800 MHZ Sonnet CPU: Open Firmware, 1.0.5 To continue booting the MacOS type: BYE To continue booting from the default boot device type: BOOT ok 0 > boot DEFAULT CATCH!, code=FFF00300 ok 0 > .properties name device-tree model Power Macintosh compatible AAPL,8500 MacRISC AAPL,cpu-id 3900CC99 #address-cells 00000001 #size-cells 00000001 clock-frequency 02FAF080 Any ideas on what this "boot DEFAULT CATCH!, code=FFF00300" means? Is there some web site that lists these. I tried searching the Apple developer site for "Open firmware errors", but didn't see anything. Here's the device tree if this has any helpful information (note I now have added an ATI Radeon 7000 graphics in this box). 0 > dev / ls FF828F80: /PowerPC,601@0 FF829878: /chosen@0 FF8299A8: /memory@0 FF829AF0: /openprom@0 FF829BB0: /AAPL,ROM@FFC00000 FF829DC8: /options@0 FF82A9A8: /aliases@0 FF82ABE8: /packages@0 FF82AC70: /deblocker@0,0 FF82B470: /disk-label@0,0 FF82B9B0: /obp-tftp@0,0 FF82DDF0: /mac-files@0,0 FF82E5E8: /mac-parts@0,0 FF82ED48: /aix-boot@0,0 FF82F1C0: /fat-files@0,0 FF830790: /iso-9660-files@0,0 FF8310D8: /xcoff-loader@0,0 FF831A98: /terminal-emulator@0,0 FF831B30: /bandit@F2000000 FF832D20: /gc@10 FF833158: /53c94@10000 FF8349E0: /sd@0,0 FF835610: /st@0,0 FF836288: /mace@11000 FF837100: /escc@13000 FF837258: /ch-a@13020 FF837908: /ch-b@13000 FF837FB8: /awacs@14000 FF8380A0: /swim3@15000 FF8391A8: /via-cuda@16000 FF839D38: /adb@0,0 FF839E28: /keyboard@0,0 FF83A578: /mouse@1,0 FF83A628: /pram@0,0 FF83A6D8: /rtc@0,0 FF83ABA0: /power-mgt@0,0 FF83ACC0: /mesh@18000 FF83C828: /sd@0,0 FF83D458: /st@0,0 FF83E160: /sixty6@1C000 FF83E288: /nvram@1D000 FF840278: /pci106b,1@B FF840450: /ATY,RV100Parent@D FF862090: /ATY,RV100ad_A@0,0 FF863158: /ATY,RV100ad_B@0,0 FF864278: /pci-bridge@E FF864EE0: /pci12ee,8021@C FF865180: /pci12ee,7000@D FF8653F8: /pci12ee,7000@D,1 FF865670: /pci12ee,7001@D,2 FF865A40: /pci1011,9@F FF83E3C0: /chaos@F0000000 FF865E98: /control@B FF867250: /planb@D FF83F350: /hammerhead@F8000000 Thanks |

Take a look at this technote--it should answer your questions (especially the "Connecting for Two-Machine Mode" section). http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn/tn1061.html |

I also tried the printer port now, and it does not show anything during boot either. I should mention that the serial cables I'm using to connect these machines are the same ones I used to successfully connect a Wallstreet G3 laptop to a F50 RS/6000. I used a simple Mac OS 9 application that allowed me to connect to the login prompt on the RS/6000. So I think the cables should be okay since my Linux host and the RS/6000 have a DB9 serial port and the G3 and PM 8600 have the old Mac serial port (mini-8 or something like that). I took a look at stty output on the linux side and it has the standard unix settings that I'm familar with: even parity, 1 stop bit, 8 bit characters. So I'm not sure why I don't see anything on boot with verbose mode. |

Is there a way I can test the serial link on the Mac once it is up an running. I tried doing the following commands from Mac OS X to see what I would see on the cu session from the linux: echo "hi" > /dev/tty.modem echo "hi" > /dev/cu.modem All I see on the linux side is one strange character and it hangs up, requiring me to do another cu. I also tried changing the baud rate for cu (on the linux side) to the following baud rates: 9600, 19200, 115200 and no success. |

I tried setting my output and input device to the modem port. I then connected this port to a Linux (Red Hat 7.2) machine on ttyS0. I then just tried booting verbose mode on my 8600 using the functioning 400 MHZ Sonnet upgrade, but I don't see any output on the linux side. I'm using "cu -l ttyS0 -s 9600". Does the modem port on the PM 8600 default to 9600 baud? Are there any other settings I change (i.e. parity, etc) on the linux side? I also tried setting output to the modem port and input to the keyboard, but this didn't make any difference. I do see the cu session hanging up when I power down the PM 8600. So it appears the linux side is at least partially aware of the PM 8600. Thanks. |

Also, you don't need to turn off auto-boot to get the extra diagnostics. Just set the output-device to the monitor and hold down command-v at restart. (Though if Open Firmware is having trouble driving your monitor, that may not work either). In the last resort, it is also possible to point the input-device and output-device at a serial port and connect a serial cable to another Mac. |

It's odd that turning off auto-boot would not get you to the Open Firmware prompt. I suspect that it does, but that Open Firmware is having trouble with your monitor for some reason. If that is the case, the keyboard should work, so if you were to type a command (like shut-down, or is it shutdown ?) that would work. At least, it would be interesting to try. |

Greetings Same problem with booting with Sonnet 800 mhz card. I am in need of fixing my start up disk where 10.2.1 lives. I am unable to do this because the new sonnet card wont allow this to happen. Any more suggestions? Than |

I tried the debug suggestions in "Diagnosing the problem", but I'm never seeing the open firmware prompt. I turned off auto-boot and set keyboard (for input) and monitor (for output) and hold down command-v on reboot. However, I don't see anything on the screen. I also changed throttle to the max 24, but still nothing. I tried these same debug steps with the Sonnet 400 MHZ that works, and I also don't see anything on the screen. I even tried changing the output to video-out, but still nothing. So it looks like I'm unable to get to the open firmware prompt, no matter what CPU I'm using. With the 800 MHZ Sonnet CPU, I also tried de-interleaving memory, as well as reducing the memory from 512 MB to 128 MB. Neither of these worked. Any help appreciated. Thanks. |

Yes, there is dome additional debug settings you can use. Take a look at the 'Diagnosing the Problem' section in the documentation. Basically, you want to point the output-device at your monitor, and then hold down command-v as the computer restarts. |

That card was unuseable for me also. I don't know if I just had a flaky unit, but I tried it in three separate machines with no luck... Maybe it's a mach5 thing? |
