I think that is the case. I've used all three at various times with different processors. For instance, I could not use L2CacheConfig with an XLR8 G4/450. I've used both Sonnet X Tuneup and Cache Control X with my Sonnet G4 without problems though. I have not tried the combination of Cache Control X and L2CacheConfig with this card yet. I'm curious to see if it will improve performance. In the meantime, I've been satisfied with the Sonnet software because it enables both of the cards external caches. |

Maybe it is just a matter of finding the right Cache enabler, because powerlogix of the 3 was the only one to crash my system. |

So far, so good with Ryan's 3.3 L2 cache enabler. The machine seems to be stable so far with his enabler. Maybe this was the source of my random freezes. My son could freeze the machine with the Powerlogix enabler my running Audion 3.02, AIM, and Internet Explorer at the same time. The freezes were very predictable with these three apps running together. With Sonnet's enabler, couldn't launch any of these apps without a freeze. Now, with Ryan's enabler, we're running AIM, Audion, IE, Software Update, and the memtest utility all at the same time. I set memtest up to eat up all of the available free memory and then started all of the others apps so the system would page heavily. So far, no freezes or crashes. Stay tuned... |

I tried switching from the Powerlogix cache enabler to Sonnet's 1.2.5 enabler and reinstalling the XPF 2.2.4 extensions. My freezes became much more frequent than with the Powerlogix enabler. Finally had to blow away the Sonnet enabler. Funny thing is, the machine is much more stable without the L2 cache enabled (but significantly slower as well). I'm wondering just how compatible the Sonnet cache enabler is with the XPF extensions. Maybe the Sonnet enabler would be happier with the Sonnet extensions - who knows? And I have the Sonnet Crescendo PCI G4 card so I thought that the Sonnet enabler would be more stable than Powerlogix. Will try Ryans 3.3 cache enabler next. Tony |

If you install it and then reinstall the xpostfacto extensions over it you will take care of getting rid of all of the Sonnet components except the SonnetCache.kext. That you can remove in the terminal with "sudo rm /System/Library/Extensions/SonnetCache.kext". Reboot and then reinstall your prefered cache enabler. |

I want to try Sonnet's software but i think it may be the cause for the crashes in 10.2. How would i go about uninstalling it if it does not work? |

when I had my XLR8 G4/450 installed I set the cache ratio at 2:1 and used write-back mode. It is supposedly more efficient than write-through and thus faster, though I don't think you'd really see the difference. |

What are the best settings for L2 Cache Enabler. I have a 9600 with xlr8G4/450. Write Back or Write through? What Clock Ratio? Doug |

Basically two choices: Use Ryan's L2 cache program along with the PL X Cache program. This way the L2 and the L3 caches will be enabled. The other way is to download Sonnet's X Tuneup 1.2.5 which is free. Install this in OS X and then reboot back into OS 9. Then reinstall the extensions from XPostFacto which will overwrite the files that TuneUp installed but leaving behind the Sonnet Cache enabler extension which is all you really want. My system became unstable using the Sonnet's other extensions. The advantage with the Sonnet TuneUp is that it's cache extension loads really early thus making the bootup really quick in X. |

Please answer a silly question, summary of the issues would be great: With the Sonnet 800 card, what exactly is needed to be installed for enabling cache on OSX? Is L2CacheConfig enough (I installed this for my G3/500), or is the Sonnet Cache Enabler needed? Is the Sonnet Cache Enabler the kext that I hear Sonnet wants to charge $30 for? I gather that the PowerLogic Cache Control X can be used instead of the Sonnet kext? |

I have a 256k L2 cache on the motherboard, and a NewerTech G3-300 with 1 MB Bakside Cache on an 8500. Using Ryan's L2CacheEnabler with a profile generated by the MaxPowr 2.0.5 Control Panel, in OSX.x the Apple System Profiler reports only 256k of L2 cache memory. Is it possible that the L2 Cache in OSX.x is loading the 1MB of Backside Cache, and ASP is just not seeing it, as you suggest in your first post? Is there any other way (other than ASP) to check for the L2 cache size? In OS9,1, the Apple System Profiler reports that it sees both the 1MB and the 256k caches as loading. If I remove the 256 motherboard cache, it still reports the 1 MB Backside Cache in OS9.1. Using the profile generated by either of these two configurations (with or without the 256k motherboard cache), the 1MB Backside cache is not reported as seen in OSX (currently I'm running OS 10.2.2, but it does this also in OS 10.1 and 10.1.5 and 10.2). With 256k cache removed, no backside cache is reported in OSX.x by ASP. With the 256k cache installed, 256k of cache is reported as enabled by ASP. In OS 9.1, ASP reports both the 1 MB Backside Cache and the 256k Motherboard Cache, for a total of 1,256k of Backside Cache. I have downloaded and tried to install the NewerTech MaxPowrX (v. 1.0 cache controller) Installer from this site and others, and I can't get the package to install. When I double-click on the MaxPowrX Package in OSX.x, I get a dialog box that says, "The Installer Package 'MaxPowrX' cannot be Installed: Missing or old Bill of Materials." Is there a fix for this that I can apply? Maybe I should run a Package Repair program on it, or open TomeViewer? How can I get this to install? Help!? -Jim |

I tried using Sonnet Software with my XLR8 G3 sometime ago and it crashes my machine. I resently also tried installing the Sonnet OSX install software. It installed ok but also crashes because of the sonnet cache enabler software |

Does anyone know if its possible to use the sonnet cache enabler with the XLR8 cards ? According to their documentation it is not listed as one of the supported cards. |

The Apple System Profiler doesn't report the L2 cache correctly on older machines. Sonnet's cache enabler does enable the L2 cache earlier in the boot process. The reason that it can do that is that it can auto-detect the correct settings, whereas L2CacheConfig needs to wait for a startup item to feed it the correct settings. (And that happens after the blue screen appears). I might be able to fix this someday--it is on my list of things to do, but it will be a significant amount of work. |

I've noticed your observations too. I assume you are running 10.2.1. I'm also have a Sonnet G4 800. I experimented with the Powerlogix Cache Control X and the Sonnet kernel extension and have for the moment settled on using the Sonnet extension for the reasons you mentioned, though I really prefer the Cache Control X because it has an interface and configuration options via the command line. If I boot back into 10.1.5 the cache is reported by ASP, but this along with memory and as well other items have dissapeared from ASP. |
