AltiVec Fractal Carbon, MacBench 5 and CineBench 2000 testing
AltiVec Fractal Carbon - Longer bars are better. No real surprises here, the Sonnet G3/500-512 returned the highest scores due to it's 50MHz and 100MHz advantage over the competition. A version of the Interactive Fractal Demo, a numerically-intensive parallel graphics application, that uses the Velocity Engine, a.k.a. AltiVec, and multiple processors (MP) for its computations. When testing using a G3 processor as this describes, the processor with the faster clock speed truly has the advantage as none of the specific functions required for acceleration are present with a G3. MacBench 5. Longer bars are better. Very interesting scores! The fact that the Sonnet G3/450 AND the PowerLogix G3/400 were able to beat the Sonnet G3/500 proves without a doubt that cache ratio plays a HUGE factor in performance with processor upgrades. And, The FPU scores - notice they are linear in percentage faster/slower? That's directly related to clock speed. The FPU is not affected by either bus speed or cache ratio in this test, we have definitive proof of that. The Sonnet G3/500-512 and the PowerLogix PowerForce G3/400-1M both are running at 50MHz bus speed, the Sonnet G3/450-1M is running at 45MHz. A "classic" benchmarking utility that still shows it's ability as an invaluable tool for Mac OS 9 users. This test was performed under Mac OS 9.1, and it clearly shows the benefits from upgrading both the processor, and the video card. MAXON CINEBENCH 2000 - the Cinema4D Speedtest. longer bars are better, the top score is a total of the bottom 3 scores (all 3 tests compiled). The trio of processors all turned in respectable scores with this test, and once again it seems that MAXON's test is more about MHz than cache ratio or bus speed. The final total was within a few percent of each other. This is a benchmarking tool using the CINEMA 4D engine - here's more information about that program from the MAXON website- "CINEMA 4D is the revolutionary and lightning fast 3D raytracing and animation tool. With lots of high end features at a low-budget price, the repeatedly awarded CINEMA 4D versions give everyone the possibility to enter the fascinating world of 3D modelling and animation. The powerful and comfortable interface makes it possible to produce high quality images and animations after a few hours of work with the program. CINEMA 4D is also very flexible and supports over a dozen of external file formats (like DXF, VRML, Lightwave, 3DStudio, etc.)." |
