Benchmark #3. Other World Computing "Mercury On-The-Go" 4200 RPM and
5400 RPM Portable FireWire Drives using the Oxford 911 chipset. The OWC Mercury On-The-Go FireWire drives are one of the most portable FireWire drives on the market. Utilizing mechanisms from IBM and Fujitsu (as of November, 2001), all of these drives offer a performance level unheard of from such small 2.5" drives in the past. If you look at individual descriptions on each of the different models, you see that the peak read and write scores for each of these drives is about 35 MB/second. Considering that all but the 48 GB drive run at 4200 RPM, it's impressive that all of the drives were able to best the internal mechanism! Awesome power in a 8oz package! Another nice feature, is that these drives are bus powered. Just plug the drive into a FireWire port on your Mac and let the drive mount up. The power for the drive is supplied through the FireWire cable. That makes this drive truely portable! When you are done, simply unmount the drive from your desktop and unplug the drive. You are ready to go! Conclusion When buying a FireWire hard drive, it is important to take a careful look at the performance of the internal mechanisms. In our tests, we also discovered that the operating system can be a big factor in drive performance. OSX showed extremely impressive gains over tests done in 9.2.1. This does a great job of showing just how hard Apple is working to make FireWire the best that in can be.
