Background

Please note that when any of the drives listed above are installed and formatted, the corresponding Desktop icon will be displayed as an external drive. This behavior is related to how the operating system identifies the drive and cannot be adjusted by OWC. The impact of having this icon is purely aesthetic; it has no bearing on drive performance.

The steps below are provided as a courtesy and provide a means of manually changing the SSD's default external icon, to a standard internal hard drive icon. This method can be used after the original drive has been removed and the OWC drive installed.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Open a Finder window.
  2. From the main menu, choose Go > Go To Folder...
  3. In the dialog box that appears paste the following: /System/Library/Extensions/IOStorageFamily.kext/Contents/Resources/
  4. Find the silver drive icon; it is named "Internal.icns".
  5. Locate your SSD drive icon on the Desktop, then right-click it and choose "Get Info".
  6. You should now have a Finder window open with the icon you want to use, and a Get Info window for your newly installed SSD.
  7. Click-and-drag the Internal.icns file until your cursor is over the small icon preview at the top-left corner of the Get Info window, then release the mouse button or track pad.
  8. Close the Finder window and Get Info Info window.

You should now have an updated drive icon that matches the default of your original internal drive.
