  • Release Candidate (RC) firmware set

    There are two kinds of firmware for SSDs Mass Production (MP) and Release Candidate (RC). Prior to an MP firmware release, there are beta firmware releases and an RC firmware release. Often, the RC is the same as the MP release, however there can be small changes and bug fixes made between the two. OWC has evaluated the RC for the 6Gb/s SandForce 2281 Processor and found it to be stable with no issues reported during our testing. However, as with any evolutionary product, issues may surface as different usages and configurations are employed and it is important to understand that there will be further updates and revisions.

    Since no firmware update is currently offered for the OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD, no update page exists.     It is important to note that the current firmware update tool requires the use of Windows XP/Vista/7. OWC is currently working on a Mac OS based update tool, but we do not have an exact availability date.

I was just looking for a unit to house 4 6GB drives that I use for storage, not run in a RAID config, and am pleased with the TB3 connectivity and performance. If only the fam ran a bit quieter... it's no where near a deal breaker, but a tad louder than I was hoping for. Also i couldn't find any info on how much port the unit supplies over TB3. My guess is 60watts from what I was able to determine via macOS system report. My 2016 MacBppk Pro requires 85, which I can get from my LG 5K display, so I changed my TB3 config to accommodate, and all is good!

Rating: 5/5 After just one day of use, the Thunderbay 4 with dual Thunderbolt 3 ports works as expected on my 2017 iMac January 31, 2018 I received my Thunderbay 4 yesterday, along with two HGST 6TB drives purchased separately at OWC.

The drives, one in slot A, the other in slot B, loaded into the housing in just a few minutes.

After a minor problem entering the SoftRAID Lite XT serial number in the SoftRAID Lite application (SoftRAID support answered my emailed question within 2 minutes and provided a solution) I proceeded to create a RAID 0 with the two drives. That took just a few minutes - the process is simple and clear.

The unit connected to my new 2017 iMac with no problems. I've been transferring data for about 4 hours from my old Mac Pro, and the drive stays connected and behaves as expected. This morning on boot-up it continues to function perfectly.

I just added two additional drives from my old computer that I will use as independent drives. Drive C is a general data drive, and that mounted and allows me access to all data that was already on the disk. Drive D will act as a Time Machine drive for Drive C. (I have an older OWC Mercury Elite Pro Dual that backs up the main RAID hourly using Carbon Copy Cloner).

So far, so good! This is the drive I wanted, and it was worth the wait to get Thunderbolt 3 connections. I know the Thunderbolt 2 version would have been good enough, but I like the direct connection to my new iMac without converters, and the fact that is ready to chain another drive in the future.
