Rating: 5/5 Dependable unit November 8, 2016 I use these for myself and buy them on spec for customers. I am a Mac Specialist and use these units almost exclusively for Time Machine backups. Their dependability long term is unsurpassed. I personally have OWC enclosures that are 8-10 years old and have never had an issue.

Rating: 4/5 wonderful addition to my network August 4, 2016 I needed an external SSD drive to handle my work in process. I'm a videographer and need as much processing power and speed as I can get. I have an old MacPro 4,4. This drive worked beautifully from day one. It was plug and play. I trust it with my most precious work.

Rating: 4/5 Good looking, fast, best bang for the buck! July 13, 2016 I purchased this after getting a new Late 2015 iMac Retina. The iMac has a 1TB 7200 RPM drive and my previous Mac was a Mini that I had upgraded with an OWC SSD. I became spoiled having an SSD and really wanted to decrease boot and program load times substantially. Initially, I looked at Thunderbolt 2 enclosures, but couldn’t see enough benefit due to the increased cost. I labored over specs for days and had a few email exchanges with Rebecca @ OWC sales/support to clarify things that I was unsure about. As in my previous dealings with OWC she was professional, patient and informative.

I decided to go with a USB 3.0 enclosure as a trade off for just a little less speed for a lot less money. I ordered it on a Sunday, with Monday being a holiday. So the drive was shipped promptly on Tuesday as expected and arrived within two days. Not at all bad for free shipping!

When it arrived, I started with some simple benchmarks. I used XBench and saw results of 314-400MB/s write and read speeds. Certainly an improvement over the internal 7200 RPM Seagate which gave read/write of 162-172MB/s. The enclosure feels rock solid, is attractive and blends with the design elements of my iMac and supporting Twelve South HiRise.

So on to making a bootable clone. For this I used SuperDuper. That process was fairly simple and after 2.5 hours it was complete and I was ready for the moment of truth. After changing the startup drive designation and rebooting, program load times were reduced significantly. I don’t have hard numbers on these, but as a “for instance” when I would click on System Preferences I would get the bouncing icon for 5-30 seconds. Now it’s instantaneous. Office applications used to take several seconds and now just fly open.

After a shutdown I timed the startup sequence. It does take a little longer for the iMac to find/mount the drive but overall boot time has been reduced from 1:15 to 41 seconds. Less than half the time of previous booting.

All things considered I’m quite pleased with the performance improvements that this external SSD has brought me. I would not go so far as to say it’s a “true SSD experience”, but it is darn close. I don’t have the means to monitor the temperature of the drive, but any time that I place my hand on the enclosure it’s cool to the touch. And of course it’s completely quiet. I gave it a 4-star rating because ½ stars weren’t available. The only thing that keeps it from being a 5-star is that I really hoped for a bit more speed. Yes, I’m a very critical consumer.

The instructional videos from OWC are very good. I have relied upon them when installing an SSD in my old Mini. But the process of opening my 2015 iMac (that’s still under warranty) to swap the drive was a bit daunting.

Time will tell in regards to the stability and longevity of this arrangement for my uses. But I do have a lot of faith in the quality of OWC products. Every Mac I’ve owned has been upgraded with RAM or SSD’s from OWC. In six years I haven’t had one failure.

Rating: 5/5 This product works and is well built March 29, 2016 I just bought my second unit and feel very good about this product. Pro" 1. It is built well, allows SSD and HDD drives to run at full speed on either interface - USB3 or FW800. 2. The drive runs cooler than my previous tiny enclosure (which did neither and delay the startup process interminably), 3. It protects the internally mounted device from vibration with a small grommet around each of the four drive mounting screws. At least for portable use, I recommend using all four supplied screws. 4. Allows external power supply or internal bus power to run the unit. 5. Has a rear mounted on/off switch. A nice thought! 6. Runs cooler than others due to it's perforated enclosure design, e.g., better airflow. I keep it my deep desk drawer full time and monitored its temperature (DriveDX) on a S.M.A.R.T. device there - the case runs just a bit warm to the touch. The returned internal drive temp is 31°C. 7. While cost is higher than most 2.5" externals, the feature set puts it in a better performing group, in my opinion. Con 1. Not a toolless design. 2. A bit more but worth it! Also if you shop elsewhere a recent price reduction puts it closer to the "cheapos".

Rating: 5/5 Works great February 27, 2015 Connected to my Mac Pro (Mid 2010) to add-on eSATA PCI Card (don't remember the brand). Fast on the eSATA connection, and reliable so far. I use it for sample playback on music applications, which requires very fast disc/access time, and is doing great. The enclosure is sturdy. It is expensive, compared to similar items, but the quality is as good as it gets.

Rating: 5/5 Nice Enclosure! December 24, 2014 I bought this to maintain full USB 3 compatibility with the new Mac Pros at my work, and also added an eSATA card to my own Mac Pro tower for similar speeds at home. This is quite an improvement over USB 2 and Firewire 400, and really speeds up file copying.

It seems well-built, compared to other enclosures I've owned that just hold the drive in place with a couple screws, without attaching to the control board. In one enclosure I used to own, the hard drive would come loose from the board without warning (and according to Murphy, it would do so at the darnedest times, too. Pulling out a small screwdriver and reassembling my hard drive in the middle of a presentation made quite an impression.) This enclosure has screws positioned to keep the drive attached to the board, and the board attached to the enclosure, just like it should. Glad I bought it!

Rating: 5/5 A great solution for installing Linux on a Laptop June 19, 2013 I have a PC laptop (workstation replacement). I was looking for a way to install another operating system (Linux) without disturbing the laptop's existing disk drives or boot loader. I was able to plug the Mercury Lite drive into the eSata port and also into the USB port for power and install Linux without difficulty. Everything worked out of the box. The installation went smoothly without disturbing the existing disk drives on the laptop. The Mercury Lute drive is very fast, quiet, easy to pack and light-weight. It does not get warm to the touch so I do not need to take precautions as to where it is placed.

Rating: 4/5 This drive is excellent! January 28, 2013 I have ordered this drive just because it was hard to find drives with eSata support here in Kuwait market. And I didn't had USB 3.0 port on my notebook. This drive was fantastic. It gives me a really good speed with eSata connection in data back-up and retrieval. Highly recommended for those who does not have USB 3.0 port and have eSata port.
