10.1 installation stuck at 80% progress |

I am trying to install 10.1 using XPF 2.2b16 on a 7500 with a PowerLogix G3/ 400 card. My 10.1 install CD is a copy of the 10.1 upgrade CD modified according to the famous MacFixIt instructions, in order to be able to use it as a stand-alone installation CD. The system installation progress bar gets to about 80% and then the messages There were errors installing the software. Could not write file. Please try installing again. appear. What's wrong? What can I do to fix it? I tried installing 10.0, but 2.2b16 tries to copy some files that don't exist on that CD. Dominik Hoffmann |

A couple of notes: -- the problem with 2.2b16 trying to copy a file that is not on the 10.0 CD has been fixed with version 2.2b17 -- the occasions on which you have been getting an "unresolved kernel trap" error, but then rebooting gets you a bit farther, suggest that there may be an issue with your RAM. Generally, when there are freezes or crashes that are not consistent, then the problem is often an issue with a memory chip. You could try swapping out some DIMMs to see if you can isolate a problematic one. -- when you are getting to the Mac OS X installer and you do not see the drive you want to install to, that generally relates to whether the bus it is on is supported or not. I'm guessing that the target drive is attached to a PCI card--which card is it? (If it is attached to a built-in bus, then the problem will be something else). |

Kernel panic. Reboot. Broken folder. Reboot. Same problem: OS X partition not indicated, much less available as installation destination. Backward to XPF 2.2b9. |

XPF 2.2b14 with OS X 10.0. On reboot got "Unresolved kernel trap(cpu 0)" again. I rebooted a total of six times. Each time I got the same "Unresolved kernel trap(cpu 0)" message. Finally it booted into the installer. Everthing went fine until I tried to select my OS X partition as the installation destination. Nothing besides the Install CD came up as a destination. |

I tried XPF 2.2b14. On installation reboot I got a broken folder. Restarted again, and it now is stuck at "Preparing...". |

I had another "Unresolved kernel trap(cpu 0)". I rebooted and installation off the CD commenced but then got stuck in the "Prepairing..." stage. I booted into OS 9 erased the OS X partition and started over. We'll see. |

This time, I got an "Unresolved kernal trap (CPU 0)". I am going to hit "r" to reboot and see what will happen. |

After the system rebooted I ended up with the broken-folder icon. After another power cycle the broken folder came back. I am not booting into 9.1 to wipe out my OS X partition and start over. |

I am now starting over, after replacing the PowerForce G3 card with a 120 MHz 604 card from a PowerMac 7600. We'll see, how it behaves. |
