Hello: I have downloaded L2CacheConfig 3.3 in anticipation of 10.2 and got an error when I tried launching GrabL2CacheSettings on my 8500 running Mac OS 9.2.2 (patched via instructions at www.os9forever.com). It gives me the following error in MacsBug: PowerPC privilege violation exception at 159E1DAC. Most likely, entering supervisor mode has changed between 9.1 and 9.2.x. Here's some info from MacsBug Disassembling PowerPC code from 159E1D84 No procedure name 159E1D84 dc.l 0x0005BA48 | 0005BA48 159E1D88 dc.l 0x1595E39C | 1595E39C 159E1D8C dc.l 0x00000FAE | 00000FAE 159E1D90 dc.l 0x159E1DE0 | 159E1DE0 159E1D94 dc.l 0x159697D0 | 159697D0 159E1D98 dc.l 0x159E1DA0 | 159E1DA0 159E1D9C dc.l 0x00000000 | 00000000 159E1DA0 lis r3,0x426F | 3C60426F 159E1DA4 ori r3,r3,0x6F58 | 60636F58 159E1DA8 sc | 44000002 159E1DAC *mfspr r3,L2CR ; 0x03F9 | 7C79FAA6 159E1DB0 blr | 4E800020 159E1DB4 dc.l 0x00000000 | 00000000 159E1DB8 dc.l 0x00000000 | 00000000 159E1DBC dc.l 0x00000000 | 00000000 159E1DC0 dc.l 0x159E1E70 | 159E1E70 159E1DC4 dc.l 0x00000000 | 00000000 159E1DC8 dc.l 0x1595A750 | 1595A750 159E1DCC dc.l 0x00000000 | 00000000 159E1DD0 fcmpu cr4,fp19,fp0 | FE130000 Calling chain using A6/R1 links Back chain ISA Caller 00000000 PPC 1595E9CC 159E1E70 PPC 1595A74C main+00100 Return addresses on the stack Stack Addr Frame Addr ISA Caller 159E2038 PPC 011BEBE4 159E1FB8 159E1FB0 PPC 00905198 LNGInitFonts+ 00014 159E1F58 159E1F50 PPC 009044C0 LNGGetProcessScript+00228 159E1F18 159E1F10 PPC FFD51B84 GetScriptManagerVariable+00020 159E1F08 159E1F00 PPC 0090412C 159E1EC8 159E1EC0 PPC FFD4D194 SameProcess+ 00028 159E1EC0 68K 159E1EFE 159E1EB8 159E1EB0 PPC 011BEA08 159E1E78 PPC 1595E9CC 159E1E48 159E1E40 PPC FFD4D0C0 GetProcessInformation+00024 159E1DEC 68K 159E1CFE 159E1DC8 159E1DC0 PPC 1595A74C main+00100 159E1D88 159E1D80 PPC 1595E398 159E1D68 159E1D60 PPC 1595AE4C GetSPR+00094 Displaying memory from sp 159E1D60 159E 1DC0 159E 1EEC 1595 AE50 1596 9F54 •û•¿•û••ïÆP•ñüT 159E1D70 0000 0000 1596 97D0 0000 0000 0000 0000 •••••ñó–•••••••• 159E1D80 159E 1DC0 0005 BA48 1595 E39C 0000 0FAE •û•¿••?H•ï„ú•••Æ 159E1D90 159E 1DE0 1596 97D0 159E 1DA0 0000 0000 •û•‡•ñó–•û•†•••• 159E1DA0 3C60 426F 6063 6F58 4400 0002 7C79 FAA6 < `Bo`coXD•••|y?¶ 159E1DB0 4E80 0020 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 NÄ• •••••••••••• 159E1DC0 159E 1E70 0000 0000 1595 A750 0000 0000 •û•p•••••ïßP•••• 159E1DD0 FE13 0000 1596 97D0 1596 9D61 68FF F740 ?••••ñó–•ñùah˜@ Displaying memory from 0 00000000 FFC1 0000 FFC1 0000 002B 5F00 010D 74A8 ¡••¡•••+_•••t® 00000010 010D 74A8 010D 74A8 FFC0 31A8 FFC0 31AA ••t®••t®¿1®¿1™ |

I tried plxcache again and this time after I installed it, I chowned the .app to root:wheel and with the exception of some permissions of files (readable only by root), I was able to launch it and have it save the prefs properly. Reboot works well. This is under 10.2. |

With regard to the PowerLogix problem you could check that the PLKEXT.kext extension has the correct ownership & protections & that it is being loaded automatically on reboot. The kext needs to be owned by root & be in group wheel in order to load properly. kmodstat will tell you if it is loaded. I've noticed that on some installs it ends up being owned by the administrator user instead. If it doesn't load then the Cache Control X program shows incorrect values for the size & speed of the cache. |

Guilty as charged. I didn't read everything completely before I tried installing it. Your normal shoot-then-point philosophy. Regarding Powerlogix's cache utility, it's flaky on my system: when I first installed it, it recognized my cache type and size correctly but after a reboot, it did not. It's unfortunate that its settings are in binary rather than in text format. |

Ryan clearly states that GrabL2CacheSetting doesn't work in 9.2.2. And you are also correct in your statement that entering supervisor mode is different in 9.2.x. I'm the webmaster over at os9forever.com, and as soon as I wrap up development of OS 9 Helper ( so you don't have to use the nasty patcher anymore), I plan on rewriting GrabL2CacheSetting so that it works with 9.2.x. Keep posted for more info. -Ben |

Part 2 some how that got posted before I meant it to. I prefer the Powerlogix software for a number of reasons. First of all it is the only available software which disables motherboard cache that can't be removed ( Umax J700/S900 and early Apple 8600/9600 machines ) It also gives cpu temp and is easy to change settings in and gives more optitions in general. The only thing I don't like about it is using the terminal for installing! It works great in 10.1.5 and 10.2 though I did have problems getting it to install in 10.2. OSX does seem to have a bit of Voodoo to get it to run on different machines there are diffferent oddities it seems. |

Did you miss Ryan's note on the L2 CacheConfig page that it doesn't work with OS9.2x ???????????????????????????? He does mention a work around which I didn't read. |

Well, the formatting isn't very helpful, eh? Anyhow, if there's interest, I'll send the stdlog via email. For now, my workaround is to manually create the L2Cache.config file with the help of the PowerLogix control panel under Mac OS 9. I have found that the PowerLogix Cache Control X doesn't work properly under 10.1.x. |
