seemingly at random, i'll get a "A device was not put away properly" alert, and the respective device (the CD) will dismount (OS 10.1.5). this will usually occur soon after startup (cold/reboot). any ideas? also, i've been getting odd firewire errors in OS 9.1 along the same lines. my firewire drive will simply dismount. i checked the connectors for any excessive dirt/grime, but it looks pretty clean... :p is there a way to remount SCSI/firewire devices via Terminal? how about in OS9? thanks.. |

Probably the best thing to do is look at your system log and see whether there are any useful error messages about the time that this occurs. The log is located at: /var/log/system.log It seems odd that you should get this problem both with SCSI and Firewire devices, and both in Mac OS 9 and X. It isn't obvious what root cause all those combinations could have in common. In Mac OS 9, you can use SCSIProbe to remount SCSI devices. For Firewire devices, I suppose you could turn the power on the FireWire device off and then on again, or unplug it and plug it back in again--that should remount it. In Mac OS X, the same advice would apply for FireWire devices that unmount. For SCSI devices, it depends what the problem is. In theory, ejecting the CD and reinserting it should help. If the CD tray won't open, you could try the "Eject" button in iTunes--that seems pretty reliable for some reason. |
