Sonnet 700Mhz card |

I'm getting an irresistible urge to try to over clock the sonnet 700 and 800 MHz cards. I have an 800 and have had some insights into where the PLL's are. I want to confirm them. I was wondering if anyone with a 700Mhz card can post decent pictures of the underside (non-heatsink side) of their card. It looks like it should be fairly easy to turn a 700 into an 800. but I'd like to see if I'm right. |

I've changed the wording about the 700Mhz card to "might" and "should" to reflect uncertainties about that card and ditching words like "will". |

willschou1, I don't know that a 700 card can run at 800. As a matter of fact I'm pretty sure a few won't. However I have strong suspicions that a few will. I don't think they made a radically different design for the 700, just a blue heat sink and rail. I know sonnets history with overclocking their own cards and not making it easy for a customer to do the same. That's part of the reason I wanted to try so hard at this. Right now I don't think the 700 and 800 cards are overclocked. My 800 was an 800MHz part when I looked at the die. I think it would be awesome for powerlogix to make a card with a G4+ in it that is overclockable. Despite my card not doing higher than 16x the documentation from moto seems to say that their rev 3.6 G4+ parts do really absurd multipliers like 24x, 28x and 32x. Implying that these G4+ chips could be used by upgrade makers for fast upgrades in a wide variety of macs. |

I would like to know why you seem so sure that it is possible to run the Sonnet 700 mhz at 800mhz? I would guess based on Sonnets' history that it is clocked to the max just like the 800mhz. Someone maybe the japanese site claims to have over clocked the 800mhz but by changing the 50 mhz bus chip |

That was brilliant what you did with the resistors and the old floppy cable...simply brilliant. Sorry it didn't really help you at present, but I'm sure this info will become usefull sometime in the near future. -Ben |

A nice bit of work sorry it didn't come to anything. This makes it clear to me that over clocking a Sonnet upgrade is likely a waste of time. Many have found the reason they can't over clock the Sonnet cpu is becuase Sonnet has already done that for them. ie. Many of the G3 500mhz Sonnet cards were 433 mhz and 466 mhz cpu's over clocked by Sonnet and sold as 500mhz cards! While in point of fact people got what they paid for a card that ran at 500mhz and Sonnet makes it clear there are no controls and nothning to set ie no over clocking! If we are really lucky Powerlogix or someone may make a G4 700+ that can be over clocked. |

Interesting experiment. It is too bad you could not get the card to go any faster. |

I know it's kinda off topic for this fourm. No one bothered to help me out but I managed to figure it out by myself. I didn't get a good overclock myself but perhaps others will... http://users.erols.com/jslewis/Josh/sonnet.html |

I'm still interested in this. I'm making it a little easier for folks with the 700Mhz card to give me information. I've taken a picture of the underside of my 800Mhz card. If you have a 700Mhz card and can tell me if anything is different with the underside of your card in general http://dvpro.port5.com/images/CardOverview.jpg Or specifically with these resistors http://dvpro.port5.com/images/CardDetail.jpg I would be deeply appreciate it and will probably be able to tell you what needs to be changed to make your 700 an 800 if you haven't already figured it out. All pictures about 60K. |

opps hit the wrong button There are a couple of people there who do this alot. someone has made a water cooled pc and is making it for his mac. Some over there much have done this, and i would like to know how it goes and how to do it with a 400. |
