Jaguar and ACARD/66 problem - solution found? |

I've finally gotten OS X 10.2.2 up and running on my ACARD Ahard/66 and Western Digital IDE Drive in my UMAX J700! Here's how I did it: - wiped the partition which I wanted to boot OS X on using Disk Utility. - Install OS X on a SCSI drive up to version 10.2.2 . - grab a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner Version 2.0 from Bombich Software's web site ( http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html ) - it was just released a few days ago. - clone the OS X boot from the SCSI drive to the target partition on the IDE drive using CCC . - once the cloning is complete, go back into Disk Utility - under "First Aid", perform a "Repair Disk Permissions" on the IDE boot partition. - reboot into OS 9.1, then call up XPostFacto 2.2.4 and boot OS X from your IDE partition (you might want to also re-install your extensions and Boot-X at the same time). -it may take a little longer to boot from the SCSI, but it will boot up. And I was elated and surprised when it did boot up. In fact, I'm typing this from within Jaguar 10.2.2 on the IDE parition. I'll still have to do a few tests to make sure that this is a permanent solution, but for now it's working. Who knows, it may be the basis for finding a better solution :) |

I'm not sure what solutions you need, but I have an ACARD 66 w/ an IBM 120GXP hooked up to it. I also borrowed my G4's DVD rom drive (instead of the stock 12x SCSI CD drive) and put it on as slave for the IDE 1 interface. I formatted the IBM w/ OS9.1's drive setup. I then ran XPF 2.2.3 and was able to install Jaguar. I believe I zapped the PRAM a couple of times, and I know that I had to try several times before it would install...the final time seemed to just load up the Jaguar gray splash screen, then everything started working. It's been up and running now for about 10 days and it only needed to be restarted twice. For some reason when I use a windows Hotline client to connect to my server via the internal network, it would knock out the NAT and IP masquerading. I then need to restart to get the network back. Good Luck! |

Au contraire, I have an Acard ATA/100 with a Western Digital 80Gb SE 7200 rpm drive attached. It has 5 partitions, 20Gigs of which is my 10.2.2 boot volume. WD had midling quality drives as of a few years ago but these SE drive in particular are great. It is both speedy and nearly silent. |

Quote: RE: Jaguar and ACARD/66 problem - solution found? November, 23, 2002 3:13 AM mjoecups358 I repeat myself.... My acard ahard 66 hooked to a Maxtor 60G works perfectly... Western Digital is crap. End Quote. I have to disagree there. I got a Maxtor 60 GB for Christmas last year (2001) and it died in less than six months. I have another (different model) Maxtor 60 GB in the PC that flaked out in less than a year. My replacement for the first Maxtor 60 GB (used in my mac) died in less than one MONTH. All drives were new when bought/replaced. With a 100% failure rate for these drives for me, I'm not about to get another Maxtor. EVER. I went to Fry's Electronics to look for another replacement Maxtor 60 GB after the third failure, hoping that it'd be just one huge major fluke or a really bad Karma Cloud hanging over me. It wasn't. Fry's had returns of two different models of Maxtor 60 GBs, and I mean LOTS of returns. Nearly their entire shelf/back room stock had "Previously returned - But carries full warranty" stickers on them. I even found out that the HD I returned (due to it dying less than a month later, making CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK noises and not booting up) was RESHELVED. They were selling a broken drive! Oh, and all three HDs died the same way. Quickly, and CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK on bootup. I was able to salvage the data off two of the HDs after many boot attempts using a 2nd HD to boot from, but still, that was THE worst lineup I've ever seen. Not even the lamented IBM GXP line had this high a failure rate. Western Digital used to be crap - now they're quite good. I prefer Seagate though, which is now what I use. okay, some setbacks - seems I can't do a warm or cold boot with the partition. I have to go back into 9.1 and reboot using XPostFacto. Sometimes it takes about two boots before I can get it up and running again. |
