Dear Ryan and Dear All, Ok I just joined the list, but I'm using XPostFacto since so long that the only way to provide my support is at least, to join :-) Anyway, I'm running XpostFacto since day 1 (almost). I won't go throught all the issues of the past, but today I must say that I'm rather satisfied by my configuration based on a 7500. 7500, with a G4/400 Newertech Daughterboard. 256 MB RAM PCI slots : Adaptec 2930CU SCSI card Voodoo 2 Graphic card (yes, I know a bit old now) Orange Micro Firewire and USB card SCSI Devices : Internal IBM DGHS18 Z 17 GB HD Matshita CD-ROM CR-8024 (custom) External Teac CD-R58S CD-burner External Sun Multipack of 12 HDs SCA slots (4 used so far, connected to the Adaptec SCSI external port). As the Adaptec 2930CU is only able to manage 7 SCSI devices externally and the Multipack uses predefined SCSI IDs I can only use 4 SCA HDs. The SCA HDs are configured in RAID 0 (2 x 36 GB and 2 x 9 GB) with OS X Disk Utility. The internal HD is using 2 partitions, one for OS 9.1 and the other for OS 10.2.3. After getting into troubles because my original OS 10.2.3 installation was on a mere 2 GB external HD, I succeeded to clone this installation into the 14 GB partition of the internal HD, thanks to Carbon Copy Cloner and some patience. The Firewire and USB ports of the Orange Micro card are working fine with an Apple Keyboard and my iPod. I haven't tried other devices, besides an external Firewire 80 GB HD which mounts directly. The graphic card is a bit old but works at 800 x 600 (60 Hz) and 1024 x 768 (75 Hz) in 32 bit-mode. Any suggestions to improve this configuration are welcome :-) The only thing, are the error messages I'm getting when I'm booting in verbose mode and some drivers doesn't seems to be recognized, but are recognized later as everything is working. Also, I remember having problems to get my old Teac CD-R58S recognized but this was fixed by a patch released just after the introduction of Jaguar. All the datas are backed-up using Retrospect over the network to an AIT Tape driver. Since the 7500 Ethernet port is just able to handle 10 MB/s I've installed IPoverFirewire, but haven't tested it yet. Ryan, many thanks for the providing us Xpostfacto and thank you for your kind support in the past ! If you need a guinea pig, let me know and don't forget that I'd love to get OS X running on my Spartacus (Twentieh Anniversary Macintosh) but I'm sure you must have more important things to do :-) --Manuel |

Hi Marty and thank you for your reply. To answer your questions : 1- I haven't tested IPoverFirewire yet, but will let you know ASAP. I'm not sure if it just handle the connection between 2 machines (like a twisted-pair ethernet cable) or if it can also provide IP over a Firewire Hub with other devices (like HDs) connected. 2- The 2930CU is Ultra SCSI card, not wide. Maybe there's something to improve there. Same for the graphic card. I've an ATTO Express PCIPro but used by another CPU (Dual G4 :-) 3- I don't understand your last statement... What do you mean exactly ? --Manuel |

Cool Config!!! I am curous about how your IP over FW thing will work, since my powerwave is also to full for a faster ethernet card. If there was one upgrade I would recommend I guess it would be a wide SCSI card. Like the ATTO Express PCI PSC. If I'm wrong and the 2930 is wide already then forget it. Also you could write some opengl drivers for that Voodoo2 :~/ Marty |
