My ASP under OS X provides essentially the same information for the Apple Scanner 600/27. Overall VueScan behaves the same way for me under OS X. It provides a spinning cursor for some time, but eventually it returns with a large black preview. With OS X all the SCSI devices are reported togethor with a Target number which is its SCSI id and a device number which must be assigned to it. ASP under OS 9 sees two busses and only reports the SCSI id of 2. The SCSI helper patch I refered to earlier was actually for CD/RW units. It patch enables some calls that were necessay commands for those units. Perhaps some scanner commands need to be enabled as well. The developer site for the SCSI patch said the patch was possible because the piece that needed patching was part of Darwin and so was open source. I did try and see if setting the device number on the scanner to 6 so it would match the OS X device number made any difference, but it did not. Actually no matter what number I set the device number to, ASP continued to report it as device 6 even though the Target number changed to reflect the actual device number set on the unit. That is a disappointment to me because I use a scanner quite often. William Ove |

I am using a ColorOneScanner 1200/30 with my 8500 under OS X using VueScan (it also works with SilverFast's Canon 300 demo). It will *not* work under OS X on the external bus but does work with a PCI bus SCSI card (Adaptec 2906). Using the external bus and OS X, ASP can see and identify the scanner but VueScan, et al, simply can't communicate with it properly. VueScan appears to freeze (spinning CD cursor) but after several minutes, it shows a black image which is probably its interpretation of what it has received... BTW, this is what ASP reports from the scanner: IOSCSIParallelDevice SCSI Product Name IX-06015C SCSI Target 2 SCSI Product Revision 1.07 SCSI Vendor Name CANON SCSI Device Type 6 Based on what it is reporting from the hard drives, the SCSI Target number is the SCSI ID, being correctly reported in this case as 2 Mark |

There was a bug in SCSI implemtation, that Apple fixed in 10.1.3(?). Prior to that there was a third party patch. This caused me problems on a Wallstreet PowerBook when try to access external devices. The third party patch fixed it and according to the developer of the patch it was no longer needed after the 10.1.3 update. However VueScan is not working with OS X on my 8600 either. VueScan works with OS 9. I am atributing the problem to the external/internal SCSI busses. My Scanner is an Apple 600/27. It is set as device 2 on the external buss, but according to the system profiler OS X is assigning it to device 6. I have learned from years of use that this scanner needs to be device 2 if it is going to work reliably. I have no device 2 installed on the interanl buss and OS 9 uses the scanner as device 2 and as I noted earlier OS X gives it # 6. I am assuming this is an OS X problem. I do have a couple more things to try before I throw in the towel and will report any success I might have. William Ove |

If I remember correctly, the VueScan author has suggested that there is a bug in the SCSI driver for the built-in bus which causes problems with VueScan. In theory, this kind of thing should be fixable, and it is on my list of things to do. But I haven't gotten that far yet. Apparently, connecting the scanner to a SCSI card sometimes works better. |
