Problematic 8500 |

Dear Forum: This is my first post to the list. The 8500 has a Sonnet G3 350MHz processor upgrade card with 1 MB cache, 320 MB RAM (2 X 128 MB modules from Other World Computing and 4 x 16 MB modules originally in the machine), Twin Turbo 128M video card, a Keyspan USB card, and a 4GB Seagate Barracuda internal SCSI hard drive. I have been trying to install OS X (first Jaguar and later OS 10.0.3) on a friend's PowerMac 8500. After several attempts to do this installation, I have temporarily given up. Each time I have tried to install OS X, a message pops up just when the software is about to be installed stating that there were errors trying to install this software. I removed the video and USB cards to see if this would make a difference. I tried installing Jaguar first and later OS 10.0.3, but without success. The same error message popped up. I am wondering if the older, smaller capacity RAM (the four 16 MB modules) might be the cultprits. Someone who responded to my query on another list made mention of this as a possibility. Is this likely? Can anyone else suggest what else might be going on here? Is there anything else you need to know? Roland :( |

Is XPostFacto giving you the error, or are you getting as far as the Mac OS X Installer before the error occurs? When the Mac OS X Installer gives you an error, it generally turns out to be either memory related, or to have something to do with the drive you are installing onto. |

My question was because Ryan at several postings is telling that Apples Driver with one hardisk ist running fine, sometimes HDST fits better. I´ve got the appledriver too because it is running 3 times faster than HDST but I have the feeling, I got some problemes too... |

Hello List! I am responding to a couple of posts regarding my query about my problematic 8500. In answer to UWE's question, I formatted the drive using Apple's Drive SetUp utility. In answer to Ed's question, I have OS 9.2.2 installed on the other volume on this drive. The CDs themselves work perfectly well on my G4 466, both Jaguar and OS 10.0.3 disks. And I will try zapping the PRAM to see if this does the trick. Thanks for responding to my post. Roland :) |

Did you install on a blank new formatted partition with driver from "Hard Disk Speed Tools"? |

My system has something like 7 of the old 16MB modules and a 64MB module, and does not exhibit such a problem. The only apparent difference between your 8500 and mine is the accelerator (I have a NewerTech 250MHz G3). It is entirely possible that both the CDs are defective. Also, you don't mention whether you are running 9.1 - although it is possible that XPF will run on earlier versions of MacOS, the OS X installer may not like it. ZAP the PRAM several times before trying again - it may help. |
