unning 10.1.5 on 9500, Can't get Jaguar installed |

I'm running a 9500 upgraded to a G3 266Mhz machine as my NAT and doing a few other mundane tasks. I would like to put Jaguar on it for the superior firewall control etc. Using XPostFacto 2.2b1 has been working fairly well for me but was unable to get Jaguar to install. 2.2 and 2.2.5 both wont even let 10.1.5. boot if i use them. I get stuck at some point and it asks to continue or debug. The system has 320MB RAM, an Apple 300 PLUS SCSI CD (only thing on bus and terminated), a SIIG Ultra ATA 133/100 ATA card, a Tempo Ultra ATA66 ATA card, a PN996L Ethernet card, and an ATI Rage128 video card. The system is booting off of a Maxtor HD attatched to the SIIG ATA card. I suppose my first question is, is there anything obvious about this setup that Jaguar might be rejecting, and if not what other information might be helpful in troubleshooting this. Thanks in adavance, Jake |

My two-bits with: The first time I installed Jaguar (over 10.1.x) it would only install using the upgrade disk. More recently I had no trouble with the latest XPostFacto AFTER I erased the destination disk. |

Have you tried installing a new copy of OS 9.1 10.2.4? I believe I read in Pogue's Missing Manual that it is better to start anew with each new version of the OS ... not try to update from one to another. I've been very successful with my two 8500's ... one running with a PowerLogix G3/400 and the other, a Sonnet G4/800. Both have ATA drives, one boots off an ATA, the other off a SCSI due to interference with the Audiophile 2496 PCI card and Open Firmware. I did use Sonnet's PCI X Installer and Tune Up applications. Installed fresh copies of OS 9.1 and X, then upgraded to 10.2.4 with Apple's download. Good Luck! |

If you attempt to operate your 9500 without the logicboard installed properly as tom suggests, BE VERY CAREFUL not to let the bottom of the board sit on the metal CD rom case... This will be the end of your mac. Make sure to put some kind of thick paper/plastic insulator under the board... Good Luck, Marty |

Your ethernet card could be a problem. I'm trying to use a AsanteFAST 690 10/100 card(with latest driver) in my 9500 and its causing random freezes ; sometimes at bootup but usually when I open up my internet browser. I'm back to using my internal 10 baseT connection untill I can figure it out. Hope this helps. |

Testing memory in the 9500 |

Here's a tip for testing out your ram without having to assemble and disassemble the 9500 each time. Plug in all of the connections to the motherboard without having it in the regular "slot"; then flip the motherboard 270 degrees, with the plugin's acting as a hinge, until it is laying flat on top of the 9500's CD drive and internal speaker; then plug in your processor card and video card (ata card if you have one) and you should be able to boot normally. You'll be able to test your ram as many times as you wish without any other hassles than rebooting, that is until you have to put the machine back together. :-) Tom |

Spent about 2hrs messing around with it tonight, swapping various cards, etc in and out with no luck. I had thought that maybe my original combination included the ATI VR card instead of the ATI Rage 128 card that was currently installed. I also removed any extras. I tried most of the combinations I could think of and no luck. Still getting the kernel panic. I've tried hitting C but IIRC it was totally frozen at that point. I don't believe i've added RAM after I installed 10.1.5, but unfortunately I can't rule it out either. On the down side, removing RAM is a serious pain on the 9500. Requiring at least 20-30minutes per test of removing and replacing the motherboard. I'm very close to just buying a used B&W G3 on ebay. Might save me 10hrs of fighting with this machine. |

when you get the continue or debug message hit "c" and it should continue booting. You should also check that under the debug menu there is nothing checked off. |

I don't believe I've changed anything really from 10.1.5 to my attempts to get 10.2 installed. The only possibilities I can think of, are that I added an additional IDE card and possibly additional drives. But I believe they were all installed at the time that I installed 10.1. It does at least get me thinking that I could pull things out to simplfy the system and try and install it that way, once its installed put in the remaining components. |

After you had 10.1.5 running did you add any memory to the computer? If you did, remove that memory and try the Jaguar install again. I would also make sure the computer configuration for the Jaguar install is identical to the 10.1.5 install. Just based on my nasty experience...good luck |
