White screen after upgrade from G3 to G4 |

Hi all, I sure hope someone can give me some pointers, because I am seriously stumped here. I had 10.2.4 running smoothly with a G3/400 Sonnet Crescendo card. Recently I purchased a G4/700 Sonnet Crescendo. I booted into 9, removed the L2 cache settings (because I figured my new card would probably have other settings) turned off the computer and replaced the G3 with the G4. After this I turned the computer back on, it booted into 9 just fine. Fired up XPF, selected the "Reinstall BootX" and "Reinstall Extensions" options and hit the restart button. Nothing. I get a white screen and that's it. I had heard that having the "lower" PCI slots filled could give problems, so I only have the "top" (I take it that with "top" it means the physical top, not that they mean "the best" or something like this?) 3 slots filled. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this, and more importantly, how to solve it? Thanks very much, Jonck |

Hi guys, Just wanted to thank you all for your feedback. Your mental support has been what kept me trying different configurations when I was ready to throw in the towel ;-) Here is what solved it for me in the end: I put the original HD, cd-rom and ZIP drive on the SCSI-1 bus. I then installed a PCI SCSI card and put my larger SCSI HD on that. And this works! In the end the solution always sounds so simple, but this was one configuration that wasn't so easy to guess (at least not for me). It must have something to do with termination or some other SCSI-ish problem What still seems very strange to me is that my G3 card did run with this configuration. Oh well, it's solved now, I'm going to enjoy the new-found speed of my G4 card, yahoo! :-) Thanks to all the people on this board who support each other in their quests to keep their older macs up and running! Cheers, Jonck |

I've tried both the SCSI busses already, no difference :-( (I can mount into X using either bus with my G3 card, so strange) I have used Drive Setup and reinstalled the driver, no change either. My HD's are all formatted as HFS+. About wiping the disk, I'm a bit reluctant to do so. Is there a way to "import" the accounts I've created on my system so I don't lose everything like old mail messages, preferences for app's etc... ? Thanks, Jonck |

Since you say you are using internal SCSI I'm assuming you mean the FAST SCSI-2 connector on your logic board. The other one would be SCSI-1. If your OSX drive is attached to the FAST connector then try moving it to the SCSI-1 connector, which is the external bus. Some people have had problems booting from internal SCSI. I could not cold boot into OSX from a drive attached to the internal SCSI bus. When I moved the SCSI cable to the external bus I could boot straight into OSX without having to boot into OS9 and launch XpostFacto to get back into X.I've never heard of this happening because of the presence of a G4 card but yo never know. |

Have you tried booting into Mac OS 9 and use Drive Setup to reinstall the driver? Did you use Drive Setup to format the disk? How many partitions are on the drive (include hidden partitions)? Use Drive Setup to show them. Could be the way which your drive was formatted is causing problems. The other thing is there's the possiblity that your HFS+ (you didn't specify) was formatted in a way that it had no wrapper and is causing problems. Final suggestion is back up your disk, wipe the entire disk under OS 9 using Drive Setup, repartition, then reinstall using XPF. |

Oh yes, upon re-reading the posts I've gotten in response to my questions I guess I haven't answered some questions yet. So here goes: -I have run a disk utility, both Disk Warrior as well as Disk First Aid, both gave no errors. -I have 2 HD's, the original 4 GB and another 16 GB, both attached to the on-board SCSI -I did indeed press the little red button on the motherboard for 30 seconds when I switched CPU cards Cheers, Jonck |

Ok, guess a guy has to admit defeat when it stares him into the eyes. I've literally tried everything: stripped the system down to 128 MB RAM, with the original IX Micro graphics card, no other PCI cards. No luck, still getting exactly the same error: "Can't LOAD from this device". Thank god for my trusty old G3 card, I've put that back in now and working happily in OS X again. To me it does seem strange however, I've read many posts in this forum from people who've apparently installed G4 cards succesfully. Are there any of you out there who have gone from a G3 to a G4 card with success? Any pointers? Thanks again, Jonck |

Here's some more info on my setup: I have a 9600, with 832 MB of RAM, an ATI Radeon 7000 graphics card and a (brand unknown, tried booting with this removed, no luck) USB PCI card. Until recently I was using a G3/400 Sonnet Crescendo, with which I ran OS X 10.2.4 just fine. I'm using XPF 2.2.5, which is, as far as I know, the latest version. I have now also removed all the RAM except for the 128 MB DIMM's, but this has not changed anything for me, still the same white screen saying it can't load from this device. Anyone interested in a G4 card? :-) Thanks again, Jonck |

Can you give us some more information about your set up? Did you try pressing the reset button on the mother board when you changed to the G4? What version of XPF are you using? |

Hi guys, Thanks for your responses. About my RAM, I have 832 MB total, with 5 * 128 MB, 2*64MB and 2*32 MB. I guess if it has to do with the speeds of the RAM, maybe the 32 MB ones are too old and slow? I'll try pulling them, and see what I get. I don't think the HD can be a problem, because when I place my old G3 upgrade card back it loads OS X just fine. Thanks again, Jonck |

How is your drive connected? Is it SCSI or IDE? Internal BUS or PCI add-in card? Also, what disk driver was used to partition the disk? That is one strong possability to the root of your problem. Only Apple's Disk Utility and Intech's HDST Drivers are supported for booting into OSX, as far as I know. If you are using Lacie, FWB, or other driver for the disk it will most likely not boot. You'll have to update the driver to one that is supported to get it to boot OSX from the drive. |

What type of RAM do you have installed, i.e., is it 128MB, 64MB, or 32MB. Also, what speed is it, 60ns or 70ns. With the addition of a G4 OSX often has problems with RAM if it is below spec even if it works fine in OS9. Since the message specifically says "Can't Load from this device" I would also ask if you have run a disk utility, such as Disk Warrior, on the drive to see if there is any data corruption. Also reseating your SCSI or IDE card would not hurt either. |

One more thing (sorry for the multi-posts, can't edit my post once it's posted), I've also tried playing with the throttle settings, no luck there either. I've had the throttle at both extremes, 1 and 24, but both gave me the white screen with "Can't LOAD from this device_" message. I've also both interleaved and non-interleaved my RAM, but that didn't change anything either. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks, Jonck |

Oh yes, when I start up in Verbose mode it gives me the message "Can't LOAD from this device..." three times at the top of my screen. |
