I upgraded my PM8600 with a Sonnet Crescendo G4 700 MHz card and a Sonnet Tempo ATA133 drive card. I did a clean install of OS 9.1 on a 2GB SCSI drive and then tried to install OS X on a 7.5GB partition of a 10GB ATA drive. I restarted with Sonnet PCI X Install 1.2.6 (per Sonnet instructions), but when it starts to load the OS X CD, it hangs and displays the NO! symbol (circle with diagonal line through it). I have a similar setup at home, and did not have any problem getting it to work there. I have reinstalled from scratch numerous times (remembering to reset the CUDA before inserting the new card). I tried reducing the size of the OS X partition to 7 GB. Hardware diagnostics show no problems, but I have also swapped out the memory chips, just to be sure. I even removed the PCI ATA card, purchased a 68GB IBM SCSI drive from OWC and tried installing on it, from scratch. Since neither Apple's drive utility nor the Anibus software from OWC seemed to work, I purchased HD Speed Tools and formatted the drive with a 7 GB and a 61 GB partition. Still responded the same way. The Sonnet G4 works O.K. under OS 9; the modified startup screen indicates that it is being recognized as a 700 MHz G4. What am I doing wrong, or not doing that I should do? Marley Graham Aqua-Flo Supply |

PS I've always pushed the CUDA button, after I finished physically installing my cards ... is there a difference in the order of resetting things? I noticed Sonnet seems to say push the button, then install their CPU ... or have I got their written instruction here, reversed? |

I recently installed OS X (then upgraded to 10.2.4) successfully on two PowerPC 8500s (PowerLogix G3/400 on one, Sonnet G4/800 on the other). One has only ATA drives coming off a Sonnet Trio FW/USB/ATA/133 card. The other, I use my external SCSI drive to install on separate partitions, OS 9.1 and X. Have you updated the firmware (I believe it is called) on the ATA/133 to Sonnet's latest version? As far as CD-ROMs go, I have an 8x CD_ROM in one, and a 12x in the other - if I remember correctly). I used the Sonnet PCI X Installer and Tune Up aps sucessfully, so don't give up ... My SCSI drive is a Seagate and so are my ATA drives. Try contacting SonnetTech ... they have been very helpful in my work concerning their cards, although there is about a 24hr wait for a response at times ... Did you follow their instructions to the letter? making sure the correct destination gets selected? and the proper CD source? (I'm fishing for insight ...) Good Luck ... One difference in my config is that I have both the OS 9.1 and X on the same physical disk (but seperate partitions). Did you do the Universal Install for the OS 9.1? (Still fishing ...) |

Hi Marley: On my PPC 8500 I had to go back to the original 4x CD-ROM drive to get it to install at all. Lonnie |
