Can't get Powerforce G3/PowerCenter to work |

Started off by getting to a broken folder, or "Still waiting for root device". To try to get around this, I did an Apple Software Restore of the OS X install CD onto a hard drive partition, but still got the dame result. Reading that my Voodoo 3 video card is also incompatible, I removed it and plugged the monitor into either of the on-board video plugs. Doing this, the monitor doesn't even get a signal upon reboot after running XPostFacto, in either verbose or regular mode. Very odd. Tried zapping the PRAM but it didn't work either. I read that Catalyst machines have been made to work - any ideas what else I might try? I'd really like to set up OS X on this machine but may be settling for Yellow Dog here pretty soon. Thanks. I have a PowerCenter 132 that's been upgraded to a PowerForce 220, with 128 MB RAM, 2 GB IBM HD, and a Voodoo3 card that sometimes is removed and sometimes not. |

Just wanted to note that I got OS X working: I installed OS 10.2 onto my firwire hard drive, used a recent version of ASR (from the Developer SDK on Apple's site) to restore (clone) it to the PowerCenter's internal hard drive, and used XPostFacto 2.2 to start from the new 10.2 partition. One thing that I did to see if I could avoid problems with symlinks is I left the registration and account setup until after the partition was cloned to the internal drive. Works like a charm, although the video is pretty slow. Can anyone comment - would a Radeon 7000 make it much faster? Not sure it is worth it based on some of the things I've read here. Thanks for the great software! |

Recent versions of Apple Software Restore should have preserved the symlinks. And if your ASR did not do that, then it probably didn't preserve a variety of other things, like permissions etc. So I suspect that is what is causing the problem. You might have better luck if you can find a recent version of ASR. (Unfortunately, I do not believe there is a simple download link at www.apple.com. At least, last time I looked, you could only get it with other stuff, like the Installer SDK, for instance). |

Sorry for the updates on my fledgling progress! I found that the etc, tmp, and var files needed to be re-symlinked. This got me farther along, to the point where I get an infinite spinning beachball, and then two more alternating errors pertaining to logging in: localhost /System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/loginwindow: kCGErrorInvalidConnection: CGSGetEventPort: Invalid connection and localhost init: can't exec window system '/System/Library/CoreServices/WindowServer' for port /dev/console: Exec format error oh, and there's another random error thrown in that says, CGSNewConnection cannot connect to server ugh. |

I'm working on the Apple CD-ROM, if I can get this local guy to call me back. In the mean time, I bought myself a MacAlly Firewire PCI Card, and installed a clean version of OS 10.1 on it - and then performed the Apple Software Restore from it to the internal SCSI hard drive. It seems like I'm getting closer. I just wish I knew my UNIX better! Using b16 of XPostFacto, and keeping my Voodoo 3 plugged in, I'm getting further into the boot process (I think) but either in verbose mode or not, I get shunted to a prompt with the message, "etc/master.password: Not a directory". What do I do now? P.S. I was happy to find that typing "reboot" would restart the machine. |

this is just guessing: 1) OSX doesn't like to boot from much else than a real Apple CD-ROM. If you've got the original CD-ROM that shipped witht the PowerCentre, you may try to replace it with an Apple-ROM'd one 2) you may have to try to boot from a PCI video card that is also Apple ROM supported, like an Apple OEM IXMicro card from a 9500/9600, or a card that is OSX supported like any ATI card that has been flash ROM upgraded for OSX hoping that you can get your hands on some of these. there's also a few posts a while back about PowerCenter computers. good luck! |
