Does XPostFacto change the startup screen from the new Apple logo back to the little happy mac? I installed the new system, firsy boot showed the new logo, subsequent boots put me back into the old screen. I'm confused. |

Version 2.2.1 uses the new startup screen |

Just wanted to mention that version 2.2.1 of XPostFacto now uses the new startup screen. (Apple pushed out the latest BootX sources, so I incorporated them). This actually makes the spinning cursor in 10.0 and 10.1 look a little odd, but it is probably the lessor of two evils. In theory, I could include two versions of BootX and let people pick, but it is more trouble than I think it is worth at the moment. |

Ugh. Should have proofread more: "My 9.x and 10.2 partitions are on separate drives connected to the internal drive." should read My 9.x and 10.2 partitions are on separate drives connected to the internal fast SCSI bus. |

I have found that if you install 10.2 and go back into 9.2.2 and rerun XPF to restart, I get the happy mac screen. Apparently, the program rewrites BootX in the hidden partitions even if you don't tell it to. At least that's the behavior that I see. What I currently do is if I want to use OS 9, I just press option while the startup tone is playing. If I want to use 10.2, I don't touch the keyboard. My 9.x and 10.2 partitions are on separate drives connected to the internal drive. It will be a bummer when I need to reset the NVRAM settings so I can use a PCI video card. I like the new Apple screen. Guess I can always modify the source so it writes to NVRAM and not reset BootX. It's a good thing Ryan is still using CW 6 since I haven't had the desire or time to upgrade my CW for around 2 years. |

ok, now this is weird. I used XPF 2.2 to install 10.2 on 2 different drives. One is the primary hard drive for my system, and the other is a secondary (on the same system). Both are SCSI, both run from a SCSI card inside my 7500 w/G3-500 upgrade. The first one has the XPF startupscreen as described already, the Happy Mac and the second uses the new Apple startup screen. |

Hmm, NeXTSTEP... I already have a Cube and Turbo Color NeXTstation alongside my Macintosh and PC. |

I'll look into it. I suppose I could make the "startup graphic" a user-selectable preference. |

So in the meantime is there a way we can hack this so that it might work? The swirling cursor/timer looks great against the new background too. |

Which BootX loads when booting is controlled (on OldWorld machines, anyway) by an entry in the partition map of your boot disk. So it is not something that you can easily change. (It is one of the things that XPostFacto does). At the moment, XPostFacto is set up to insist on installing its own custom version of BootX, so even if you were to change it, XPostFacto would change it back next time you used it. (The reason XPostFacto insists is that its version of BootX has a few extra features. In the past, the difference has not been noticeable, but now it is because of the difference in startup screens). |

I installed 6C115 onto my 8500 and I had initially forgot to reinstall XPF's BootX and I was able to get the new Startup Screen, which replaced Happy Mac. The new Startup Screen worked for all subsequent reboots until I updated BootX; but if I copy BootX from the 10.2 CD using ditto, the Happy Mac is still the initial screen. Is there some other cache that I need to clear before the new Apple screen returns? |

No, I think you should use the NeXTStep instead. |

Yes, XPostFacto installs a custom version of BootX, and it is BootX that draws the logo. BootX is open source, but Apple has not updated it for the new logo. Once they do, I will be able to synchronize with their changes. It has occurred to me that I could add something to the startup screen to make this more obvious--perhaps a small OWC logo or XPostFacto logo just to make it clear that XPostFacto's custom BootX is installed. I will work on that for version 3.0. |
